About us
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 35 states. ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. This data is fully available to the national meteorological services in the Member States. The Centre also offers a catalogue of forecast data that can be purchased by businesses worldwide and other commercial customers. The supercomputer facility (and associated data archive) at ECMWF is one of the largest of its type in Europe and Member States can use 25% of its capacity for their own purposes. The organisation was established in 1975 and now employs around 500 staff from more than 30 countries. ECMWF is one of the six members of the Co-ordinated Organisations, which also include the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Council of Europe (CoE), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).

European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF reposted this
Climate resilience, emergency management, energy infrastructure, precision farming, food security, and early warning systems: Earth Observation data already play a crucial role in monitoring and supporting these key societal goals. ❓But how can EO data be better integrated into policies at all levels? This challenging question was at the heart of the ESPI-organised EO as Policy Enabler workshop in London that took place yesterday. We focused on linking cutting-edge EO technology to its impact on societal challenges, aiming to shape policy development. ESA's ongoing R&D investments have delivered breakthroughs—such as detecting methane super-emitters and understanding the water cycle—offering vital insights for climate action and sustainable resource management. ESA also collaborates with international bodies like the World Bank to support global development through EO. The workshop discussions will guide ESA’s activities, from the upcoming 2025 Council Ministerial to long-term strategic alignment with evolving policy needs. I look forward to reading the ESPI report on the "Policy Vision for Earth Observation" based on today’s contributions.

🌍🌐 Destination Earth (#DestinE) is launching the development of an AI-powered climate and weather chatbot. 🤖 #ECMWF has selected the Portuguese geospatial AI data management and cloud computing specialist provider Development Seed to develop a #chatbot as part of the EU funded DestinE initiative. Working in close collaboration with ECMWF, Development Seed will create a prototype chatbot powered by cutting-edge large language models (LLMs). This will help to make DestinE’s high-resolution #climate and weather data more accessible and usable for a wide range of users. 👉 Here are some of the keyfacts. The climate and weather chatbot is: ✅ using open models and open-source software ✅ designed to ensure trust, transparency, speed and conciseness ✅ developed to minimise AI “hallucinations” - namely when the chatbot dreams up incorrect answers ✅ anchored in the FAIR Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) ✅ evolving through continuous user feedback This tool is part of a broader effort led by the European Commission’s DG CNECT (EU Digital & Tech) to boost #MachineLearning and #AI in DestinE’s Phase II from June 2024 – June 2026.
