Church for a Different World in Manchester and Rossendale
About us
The Diocese of Manchester is the Church of England in Bolton, Bury, Leigh, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Rossendale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford. It is a place of excitement and vibrancy: a place of extraordinary opportunity for the Church to deliver on its commitment to the establishment of a worshipping, growing and transforming Christian presence at the heart of every community. Faith, hope and love. The values at the heart of our Church have never been more relevant or contemporary in today’s society. As people become busier, communities become more diverse and life becomes more demanding, it’s more important than ever to reach out and embody our vision.

Honouring a tradition that began over 200 years ago, the Whit Walk processions—first held in 1801—celebrate the birthday of the Church and bring together Christians from across the region in a joyful expression of faith and community. Each year, crowds line the streets of Manchester City Centre to support the churches as they take part in this much-loved event. Led by brass bands, the procession makes its way from Manchester Cathedral along Deansgate to St Peter's Square. This vibrant and family-friendly event welcomes people of all ages to cheer on those walking, share in fellowship, and participate in a collective Act of Worship at St Peter’s Square. To help mark the occasion and reflect on the meaning and heritage of the Whit Walks, we’ve created a special film celebrating this enduring tradition. We invite you to watch, reflect, and share in the spirit of this remarkable event. More information on this year’s Whit Walks is available here 👇 https://lnkd.in/eUnQaKaf

A big thank you to everyone who came to the Transforming Prayer Community 'Prayer Walk and Picnic' with Bishop Mark Davies last Saturday! 🚶♀️🙏🌈🥪🍎 Thank you also to those who prayed for sunshine - despite the weather forecast, the rain held off, allowing everyone to enjoy the walk around Queen's Park in Heywood. There was a great turnout, and the day was filled with prayer, fellowship, and plenty of fun for all involved. The Transforming Prayer Community is organising another Prayer Walk later this year, and we will share the details as soon as they are available.

This week, clergy and lay readers from around the diocese came together at Manchester Cathedral for two ministerial development days titled “The City is My Monastery: Contemplative Prayer and Action”. Revd Richard Carter of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, led the days, which focused on three aspects of faith: Silence, Service and Scripture. These make up three of the seven points in the ‘Rule of Life’ established by Richard, which emphasises the need for stillness and prayer in busy environments. Through reflections on art and scripture, interwoven with stories from his ministry with refugees and the homeless, Richard reminded us of the importance of turning to Christ, even during the most demanding times. Thank you to everyone who attended these two special days - it was wonderful to spend this time in fellowship, contemplation and worship 🙏

Here in Manchester we are a proudly diverse diocese, and our commitment to racial justice is a direct response to God’s call to embrace all people. We are pleased to announce that the Church of England’s Racial Justice Unit has recently awarded funding to our diocese to support four key initiatives: - rolling out the Shades diversity and anti-racism programme to young people across the diocese - supporting Global Majority Heritage congregations through our Intercultural Mission Enabler - development and training for our clergy and lay leaders, enabling our parishes to welcome people from all backgrounds and be supportive of the recruitment of clergy from GMH backgrounds - we will also be able to award small grants for innovative local parish projects. We are holding two launch events – one in person and one online – where attendees can learn more about our racial justice programme, meet some of the people already involved in this work, and find out more about new job roles that will be available. If you know anyone who might be well suited to a role in this area, please encourage them to attend! Book a place using the links below: In-person - 26th April 2025 at The Ascension, Hulme from 10 am to 12 pm: https://lnkd.in/e-4pCpUN Online - 1st May 2025 from 6 pm to 7.30 pm: https://lnkd.in/eMTz2WgW

On the evening of Shrove Tuesday, Manchester Cathedral hosted a service of reflection for those involved in safeguarding. Led by Bishop Mark Davies, the service honoured and thanked those dedicated to making our churches safer places. Bishop Matthew Porter led the congregation in rededicating themselves to the care of the vulnerable. The Revd Canon Anne Edwards and the Revd Canon Rachel Watts anointed attendees with holy oils, and candles were lit. Duncan Craig OBE, founder of We Are Survivors and a member of our Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel, delivered the reflection. Prayers were said for the vulnerable, victims and survivors of abuse, and those responsible for safeguarding. Bishop Mark concluded by thanking all who contribute to making our churches safer places for all and blessing their ongoing work. Read more about the service here: https://lnkd.in/eEfFrc-G
