Quality you can trust - since 1914

About us

Cranstons was founded in 1914 by Stanley Cranston in the village of Kirkoswald. He delivered meat directly to homes in the northern Eden Valley and provided a personalised and local approach to butchery. He helped form a legacy through only using quality products that could be trusted. Roger and Philip Cranston took the small butchers and transformed into a modern business. Today Cranstons employs over 200 people but stays true to its values of Quality you can trust. Cranstons now has Food Halls in Penrith, Orton Grange and Brampton and traditional high street butcher shops in Penrith, Carlisle and Hexham. Cranstons also has its own production unit full of exciting new product development and Café above the Penrith Food Hall which allows us to showcase the best of Cumbrian foods. In the last 5 years Cranstons have won over thirty national produce awards, most recently picking up the title ‘Best Burger in the UK’ for their Topside and Cheddar Burger at the 2024 Smithfield Awards. The burger is a blend of Beef Topside, Mature Cheddar Cheese and Tomato Chutney.
