The sun shone brightly for the Global Centre of Rail Excellence GCRE demonstration today in South Wales. The GCRE will be a purpose built site for world class research, testing and certification of rolling stock, infrastructure and innovative new rail technologies. The site was a former open cast coal mine and will house two test track loops, one for rolling stock testing and one for infrastructure innovations. I visited the great work that Concretene have been doing with Cemex and Network Rail to introduce graphene into the concrete mix recipe reducing the cement content and CO2. The facility will be a great playground for all railway infrastructure innovations that require testing within a continuous traffic environment.

Want some bang for buck? Well today saw £8m of funding from the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) for 12 cutting edge projects - bringing innovation to railway construction - all in action! The Global Centre Of Rail Excellence (GCRE), which itself has received £20m from DBT, organised an excellent demonstration event to showcase these projects that can deliver more for less, and which in turn are informing the building of GCRE on the site of a former open cast coalmine in South Wales, a comparative stone's throw from the Tata Steelworks at Port Talbot; helping to regenerate the area as GCRE becomes a world class facility for rail and mobility research, testing and certification of rolling stock, infrastructure and cutting-edge net zero technologies that will serve markets across Europe, the Middle East and beyond. I'm pictured with Harshan Kaliyamoorthi of AUS Ltd, probably the biggest rail SME in Yorkshire (apologies for any bias from this Huddersfield guy) and their 'Composite Twin Track Cantilever for Smarter Rail Electrification Revolutionising Rail', a partnership with The University of Huddersfield which is a member of the Business Department backed UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN). There is so much great stuff to convey from today that I'd need to write a book (so further apologies if you feel you've already read one).

We had a great time yesterday at the Global Centre Of Rail Excellence's demonstration day. More than 200 guests (rail industry, policymakers, press) gathered at GCRE, a few miles north of Swansea in South Wales, to learn more about 12 different rail technologies that have been funded by Innovate UK to showcase this amazing regeneration project. Sited on an old open-cast coal mine, it is now due to become a world-leading destination for sustainable rail development and play a key role in revitalising the economy of the South Wales valleys. Thanks are due to so many people for their support and enthusiasm over the past couple of years but particularly to Kelvin Davies, Simon Jones and the rest of the GCRE team inc. Andrew Johnson and photographer Matthew Nicol, to Paul Crowther, Chris Clarke and the team at Cemex Rail in Rochester, Stephen Fieldhouse for Innovate UK, Darren Sharp at Network Rail and KGJ Price Rail Ltd for the installation and ongoing engagement with the project. So many leads for sleeper deployment to follow up... this is just the end of the beginning! 🛤️ LocalGlobe Robin Klein Molten Ventures George Chalmers, CFA Mohadeseh A. It’s always pleasing when industrial collaboration bears fruit and yesterday we saw 60 low-carbon concrete railway sleepers installed at the Global Centre Of Rail Excellence in South Wales. The installation is the final part of an Innovate UK-funded project, where we partnered with CEMEX UK to deliver a more-sustainable sleeper using our graphene-enhanced admixture. We are one of 12 innovative technologies showcasing at the GCRE Demonstration Day next week (Thu 20 March), at the site - a repurposed open-cast coal mine, north of Swansea - and we look forward to meeting stakeholders from the rail industry and local and national government to tell them more about the future of low-carbon construction. 🌍 🏗️ ♻️ Many thanks to Paul Crowther and Chris Clarke from Cemex Rail for their invaluable expertise and assistance on the project and all the GCRE team and contractors KGJ Price Rail Ltd for their help on installation day. 🙏 You can still register for the event: https://lnkd.in/eQTqQw2p LocalGlobe Robin Klein Molten Ventures George Chalmers, CFA Arup Kelvin Davies Andrew Johnson Stephen Fieldhouse Neil Witten Mike Harrison Alex McDermott Dave Evans Craig Dawson Alan Beck Yasmim Mendonça Camille Wright Jessica Maldonado Nikki Mansouri Ph.D George Delleman Oliver Gordon Ayla Mafuta #graphene #engineering #sustainability #concrete #netzero

We had a very profitable day yesterday (26 Feb) at the The UK Concrete Show in Birmingham. Our CEO Mike Harrison presented and took part in a lively panel discussion with Versarien® plc's Dr Stephen Hodge and The Graphene Council's Dr Chirag Ratwani on graphene-enhanced concrete, performance, scale-up and industry adoption. Thanks to everyone who attended the talks and spoke to us on our way round the show. We saw some other really interesting technologies for lowering the carbon footprint of concrete and look forward to continuing our discussions after the show. Tomorrow (Wed 26 Feb) our CEO Mike Harrison will be speaking at The UK Concrete Show at the NEC in Birmingham, courtesy of our good friends at The Graphene Council. Mike will be talking about Concretene's progress in bringing our graphene-enhanced admixture to market, what we've learned about the raw material supply chain, scale-up of manufacturing and, ultimately, what it all means and when for concrete suppliers, engineers and developers looking to reduce embodied carbon. The session starts at 1pm at the Concrete Connect Seminar Theatre, and we'll be joined by Dr Chirag Ratwani from the Graphene Council and Dr Stephen Hodge from Versarien, who will also present and take part in a panel discussion. It's free to register (address is on the pic) and we look forward to seeing you there!
