Are compostable sensors becoming a reality? A new hybrid sensing system developed under the TESLA project (Transient Electronics for Sustainable ICT in DigitaL Agriculture) is creating more sustainable electronics. Engineers at the University of Glasgow and the Łukasiewicz - Institute of Microelectronics and Photonics have created screen-printed sensors that use biodegradable substrates and non-toxic materials. Each sensor is paired with a solar-powered, reusable module that transmits real-time agricultural data. After use, the sensors decompose naturally, enriching the soil, while the core electronics are recovered and reused.
