"We need to do a better job of trying to think about what might be the wider impacts of technology before we launch it." Can you mitigate against negative impacts? Can you learn from other technologies? Professor Peter Madden, OBE, Professor of Practice in Future Cities at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd and chair of Building with Nature, discusses sustainability and innovation, what makes a good public realm, and how innovation could be done better. 46% of deprived rural areas are classed as ‘5G notspots’ compared to just 2.7% of their urban counterparts. In the article, Jo Reid explores digital inclusion and regeneration in rural communities, and some of the emerging solutions that are showing potential to help bridge the divide. These thoughts were prompted by an insightful event from Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Diwydiant Cymru - Industry Wales, featuring Dr Alice Bunn OBE FIMechE FRAeS CEng and Dr Jenifer Baxter.

Two days at the Global Innovation Summit (GIS) left me energised and full of ideas. I attended with a clear intention: to explore how Calvium can contribute as a trusted digital innovation partner in R&D initiatives that drive positive impact for the planet. Day One I focused on the Circular Value Economy – an approach I’ve long supported. It was refreshing to hear a collective call for collaboration over protectionism, especially at a time when global challenges require united responses. I was particularly inspired by Will Campion's approach to sustainable architecture, demonstrating how innovation and responsibility can go hand-in-hand. Day Two I focused on the Eureka programme – an exciting landscape of funding opportunities for international partnerships. Plenty of food for thought about how Calvium’s expertise in digital place-making, accessibility, and sustainable systems can play a role. One unexpected insight came from the conference venue itself (part of the Hannover Messe site): a strikingly designed space, but deeply challenging in terms of accessibility. I found myself navigating catering lifts and circuitous routes just to move between floors – a sharp reminder of how vital inclusive, intuitive wayfinding solutions really are. It validated the value of the work we’ve done for clients in this space. Grateful for the connections, conversations, and clarity GIS provided – and looking forward to building on the momentum. #GIS2025 #GlobalInnovationSummit #CircularEconomy #InclusiveDesign #AccessibilityMatters #R&DforGood #DigitalInnovation #Calvium

"We were never under any illusion about the size of this project, and the research allowed us to apply our limited resources in a pragmatic way." In this interview, Art's Council England's Philip Lofthouse shares the role of research for All In, a scheme harnessing digital technology to simplify the ticket booking process for people with access needs. "We’ve had to be really definitive about the way we’re working and how that ties into the wider organisation. This means there’s a lot more clarity around things that might otherwise happen by accident or instinct. All this has helped to build confidence within the organisation and the sector, allowing people actively come on the journey with us." Hear about the discoveries, benefits, and surprises the research process has provided: https://lnkd.in/e5NC24xg Dr Jo Morrison Yoti Nicola Fieldsend #WeAreAllIn #DigitalInnovation

Just back from my first visit to Hannover Messe – and my head is buzzing from the sheer scale and stimulation of the world’s leading industrial technology fair! While AI and industrial innovation dominated the halls, I found myself drawn to the intersections of accessibility and the bioeconomy – two areas that deeply connect to our work at Calvium. One standout moment was hearing Barbora Malinovská speak about the business case for accessible design: with 15% of the global population living with some form of disability, accessible digital products aren’t just the right thing to do – they’re also a major opportunity for increased reach and revenue. And with the European Accessibility Act coming into force in June 2025, there’s a growing legal imperative too. The Bioeconomy pavilion was equally inspiring – showcasing ground-breaking approaches to sustainable, bio-based industries. Lots of food for thought in relation to EnviroCrops and how we might support digital innovation in that space. Finally, it was a pleasure to catch up with the team at the Rolls-Royce stand. Always proud to support them in their AI and digital transformation journey. Looking forward to the Global Innovation Summit tomorrow. #HannoverMesse2025 #Accessibility #Bioeconomy #DigitalInnovation #SustainableTech #InclusiveDesign #EuropeanAccessibilityAct
