The NHS Estates Technical Bulletin (NETB/2024/1 version 2.0) has introduced a national competency framework to standardise the skills, qualifications, and experience required for staff in sterile services and decontamination departments. This framework emphasises the importance of structured training pathways, notably through Level 2 and Level 4 healthcare science apprenticeships, to ensure staff are competent in maintaining high decontamination standards. Level 2 Healthcare Science Apprenticeship: Designed for entry-level roles, this apprenticeship equips individuals with foundational knowledge and skills essential for supporting decontamination processes. Apprentices develop competencies in routine technical procedures, ensuring instruments are appropriately cleaned and sterilised. This aligns with the framework's goal of establishing a workforce proficient in fundamental decontamination practices. Level 4 Healthcare Science Apprenticeship: Aimed at those progressing from assistant roles or new entrants with relevant experience, this apprenticeship delves deeper into the technical and scientific aspects of decontamination. It prepares individuals to undertake more complex procedures and responsibilities, such as quality control and adherence to safety protocols. Completion of this apprenticeship enables eligibility for professional registration with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) at Level 4, as highlighted in the framework.
