About us

Established in 1992, SHS Drinks has grown to become one of the most successful manufacturers of premium alcoholic and soft drinks. Exporting products to over 40 countries and with an annual turnover of around £100 million, we are part of the privately owned, independent SHS Group. Our leading alcohol brand, WKD, is the number one ready-to-drink (RTD) brand in the UK and Ireland. In addition, Merrydown Cider is fast emerging as a consumer favourite. Within our soft drinks portfolio, Shloer and bottlegreen are category leaders and our premium water brand, no&more is capitalising on the health trends of the nation with its promise of no sugar, no sweeteners, no preservatives and no junk – just more taste. Our drinks are sold across the world and enjoyed by millions of consumers every week. Our success is due to our people. We seek out and recruit the best talent and we provide training and development to ensure our people have access to accredited qualifications. An insight-led business, we work closely with our partners to develop new drinks that appeal to consumers. Our activation team bring brands to life, whether that’s on the high street, in restaurants or at major music festivals. Innovation has been a core feature of our activity. We take our environmental, ethical and commercial responsibilities very seriously - from the water at our plants, to our packaging and community outreach activities.

Group Chief Executive Officer - SHS Group

Ten weeks into my new role at SHS Group and I’m starting to get under the skin of what’s really happening with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) – and frankly, it’s hard to believe this policy is being allowed to progress in its current form.   As an industry, we all support the principles of reducing packaging waste and improving recycling outcomes. But EPR, as currently designed, risks punishing the very industries that have made real strides in sustainability, while driving costs to unsustainable levels for businesses already under intense financial pressure.   Under the new regime, brands will be made responsible for the full cost of packaging waste. In hospitality, this creates an absurd double tax situation: packaging served and disposed of in pubs, bars and restaurants is being classed as “household” waste, attracting EPR charges on top of existing commercial collection costs.   These charges will inevitably flow through the supply chain, from supplier to venue to consumer. It couldn’t come at a worse time. Minimum wage increases, NIC changes, rising input costs and tight margins are already pushing hospitality to the brink. The chaos is compounded even further by the fact that we won’t have the final costs from DEFRA until June, when payments for this year are due in October!   Glass - a premium, fully recyclable material - will be hit hardest. This risks pushing businesses towards cheaper, less sustainable packaging options, which is likely to lead to an increase in plastic waste in our environment, undermining both environmental progress and product innovation.   We’re working closely with industry partners and policymakers to advocate for change. But let’s be honest - the sector needs more than dialogue.   We need urgent, pragmatic reform, starting with fair exemptions for hospitality and a complete rethink of how this policy is being implemented.   On-trade or off-trade, no matter what way you look at it - and given recent government proposals - this is the last thing consumers should be facing.   #EPR #hospitality #drinksindustry #sustainability #policychange #businessimpact #regulatoryreform #innovation Mary Creagh CBE MP, Emma Bourne, Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP

As a drinks business, we’re no strangers to regulation aimed at driving behavioural change, but what is increasingly frustrating is how often these policies are introduced without fully accounting for the complexity of the industries they impact.   EPR is the latest example.   From April, Brand Owners will become fully responsible for the cost of collecting, recycling and disposing of packaging waste, even in cases where commercial disposal is already being paid for, such as in the hospitality sector. The fact this waste is still being classified as “household” is baffling and places an unfair double burden on businesses.   We have seen how the sugar levy sparked some positive reformulation, but also unfairly targeted specific categories. EPR presents a similar imbalance. Glass - a premium, fully recyclable material - will be hit hardest under the current DEFRA proposals. This creates a counterproductive incentive for businesses to switch to cheaper, less sustainable materials such as PET, undermining both innovation and environmental progress.   At SHS Drinks, we are working closely with suppliers, trade bodies and MPs to advocate for a fairer, more future-proofed solution. A two-year delay before any potential review simply isn’t good enough. In its current form, this policy is anti-growth, anti-competitive and anti-sustainability.   We urge those across the drinks and hospitality industries to come together and make their voices heard.   #EPR #hospitality #drinksindustry #glass #sustainability #businessimpact #innovation #regulationreform
