“I made my therapist cry.” After a lifetime of unresolved trauma, Juliet Sullivan thought she was too complicated for therapy—until a broken heart (literally) forced her to try again. What followed was a raw, real, and unexpectedly powerful healing journey that might just change how you think about therapy. We support counsellors and psychotherapists to help them better serve their clients.
About us
The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy is the professional association for members of the counselling professions in the UK. Counselling changes not just the lives of individuals, but of families and communities. Our desire for social justice determines everything we do and guides our relationship with our members and the public, as well as commissioners and government. It’s why we champion the counselling professions as a viable, and increasingly evidence-based choice for people. We know counselling works. We’re alongside our members throughout their careers and put them at the heart of what we do. We understand their needs and support them in making a positive difference to the mental wellbeing of their clients. We do this by promoting and facilitating research to produce trusted best practice, and by providing a robust framework to ensure the profession follows and adheres to the highest possible standards that protect individuals seeking therapy. As a result, we help the general public, individuals and commissioners make better, more informed choices about the provision of counselling, and continue to raise the ethical and professional standards of the profession.

We brought our Shadow of Social Anxiety campaign to life with an immersive art installation to demonstrate the emotional weight of social anxiety. The exhibit vividly captured how social anxiety leaves people feeling judged, isolated, and overwhelmed, and how it negatively impacts their daily lives. But the installation didn’t stop there. It also showcased how therapy can be a game-changer in managing and overcoming these challenges. Watch the highlight video of the installation now. BACP reposted this
Today I attended the launch of the Centre for Mental Health’s report, Improving Support for People with Complex Mental Health Difficulties. The report was commissioned by the Talking Therapies Task Force (TTTF) of which BACP is a core member. The project and work was spearheaded by the incredible Dr Susan Mizen. The project report highlights the value and impact of community based psychological therapies within the context of a collaborative multidisciplinary offer for people experiencing complex mental health issues. With an increasing focus on the benefits of collaborative, multidisciplinary, integrated and localised health and mental health care, the timing of this report is pivotal; especially in light of the development of neighbourhood and community based mental health and wellbeing care. And a highlight for me was to attend the launch event with the wonderful Martin Bell, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at BACP - and our BACP Vice President Baroness Luciana Berger joined us at the event. Huge congratulations to the TTTF and all the professional bodies involved- but most importantly, respect and recognition to Sue Mizen and her team - truly visionary. #bacp #Luciana Berger
