Why does being proud stop us for asking for help? Pride can sometimes act as a barrier in asking for help because it intertwines with our sense of identity and self-worth. When we're proud, we often associate seeking help with vulnerability, weakness, or an admission that we can't handle something on our own. For some of us, it might feel like asking for help undermines our capabilities or diminishes our achievements. There’s also the fear of judgement - wondering if others will perceive us as less competent. People with a strong sense of pride might strive to maintain an image of being in control or self-reliant, which makes reaching out for assistance feel like a personal risk. However, as Carol Dweck beautifully puts it in her book, The Growth Mindset, “Becoming is better than being.” Embracing help is not a sign of failure but an acknowledgment that growth is a journey. Recognising that everyone needs support at times enables us to step beyond our comfort zone, unlock our potential, and foster meaningful connections with others. Asking for help is often a courageous act of self-improvement, not a sign of weakness. Ironically, asking for help leads to growth, connection, and better outcomes.
