Our mission is to lead technology in air transport: to raise ambition, realise potential and maximise the UK's impact.

About us

The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) is an independent organisation that works alongside government and industry to transform aerospace through technology and innovation. The ATI is funded equally by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and by industrial recipients of project grants. ATI projects are chosen and overseen through close collaboration with Innovate UK and DBT. Our role is to establish a challenging technology strategy for the sector and to develop a portfolio of research and technology activity to realise that strategy, exploiting the sector's strengths and helping UK aerospace to reach its full potential in the global market.

  • What are Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) and why are they important to the ATI Programme? 📈 TRLs are a useful tool when measuring technology maturity. They define nine levels, ranging from basic research (TRL 1) all the way to full-scale deployment (TRL 9). Each level represents a distinct stage in the development process, with associated characteristics and milestones. Understanding the TRL of your technology is essential when aligning project objectives, estimating resource requirements, and planning for further development. As a result, we encourage all applicants to the ATI Programme to consider TRL guidance when shaping their innovative ideas and advancing technology. Not quite sure where your project lies on the TRL scale? Through the ATI’s draft Expression of Interest (EOI) (Strategic Programme) and draft Outline Stage (OS) (SME Programme) review process, we provide support and feedback for applications, including an assessment of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). #ATIProgramme #funding #aerospace #aviation #TRLs

  • On this day in 1924... Eight U.S. Army Air Service pilots and mechanics in four aeroplanes left Seattle, Washington, to carry out the first circumnavigation of the globe by air. They completed the journey 175 days later on 28th September, after making 74 stops and covering close to 27,550 miles. • Did you join the CAA's hydrogen challenge? ✔️ We talked to Helen Leadbetter - Technical Strategy Lead - Zero Emissions Flight, Future Safety & Innovation, Civil Aviation Authority about the scope of the CAA’s hydrogen challenge and how it enables policymaking. Helen joined us at this year's Cryogenic Hydrogen Research Conference which looked at three key areas: - Cryogenic hydrogen thermofluids behaviour - Fundamental material behaviour at cryogenic temperatures and hydrogen environments - Cryogenic hydrogen health and safety protocols, modelling, and testing This event was held by ATI’s Hydrogen Capability Network (HCN) in partnership with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). #DestinationZero #ATIHub #CryogenicHydrogen #Aviation #Aerospace

  • The ATI team attended the House of Commons recently as part of an Aerospace Manufacturer Parliamentary Drop-In, hosted by ADS Group Ltd. We were one of 11 companies who attended, joined by nearly 40 political stakeholders, and it was an excellent opportunity to talk to MPs and Peers about how the ATI is transforming aerospace through technology and innovation. In particular, we were able to share how investments in research and development via the ATI Programme are driving growth—and supporting British manufacturing jobs across the nations and regions. Thank you to Evolito Ltd and Rolls-Royce for supplying parts to showcase and demonstrating the impact of such projects in person. #ATIProgramme #Aerospace #Innovation #Technology
