  • 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 Aaron Porter shares insights from our recent "Big Conversation" event jointly hosted jointly with Association of Heads of University Administration (AHUA), where we explored how university governing bodies can become more strategically focused. In today's complex higher education landscape, boards are increasingly pulled between strategic oversight and operational compliance. Our discussions with Chairs, governors, and governance professionals revealed several practical approaches to transform governance: . Ensure strategy itself is strategic - with clear, measurable objectives and well-defined KPIs that align with your institution's unique mission . Prioritise strategic discussions in meetings by allocating dedicated time for each key pillar before addressing routine matters . Improve board papers through rigorous quality assurance and concise cover sheets that clearly outline what input is needed . Leverage data visualisation instead of narrative-heavy reporting to make complex information more digestible . Shift from lagging to leading indicators that provide foresight into future challenges and opportunities . Clarify the governance-management boundary with comprehensive delegation schemes that distinguish accountability from responsibility This ‘Big Conversation’ highlighted the need for scenario planning and strategic deep dives, while acknowledging the challenges of high turnover in governing bodies affecting continuity and institutional memory. What governance practices have you found most effective in keeping your board strategically focused? https://lnkd.in/eMgnWdTy

  • ***Governance News Alert*** In today's governance news alert we're sharing a new Higher Education Policy Institute report which reveals what students think about their higher education choices and we explore the implications it has for governance. Bristol University professors Nicola Dandridge and Richard Watermeyer, in partnership with HEPI and Advance HE, examined educational choices in higher education. The researchers conducted two surveys in 2024, reaching over 2,000 undergraduates and 2,000 graduates from UK universities. The study explored whether participants would reconsider their academic decisions in hindsight, with results analysed across demographics, disciplines, and institutions. Please scroll through the slides below to see the selected at-a-glance findings but explore much more in the full article on our website. Honoured to be attending the Advance HE Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Conference today. To be in a room filled with universities, changemakers, and forward-thinkers is something I don’t take lightly. DEI must go beyond buzzwords, beyond performance, and lean into real, actionable change the kind that shifts systems, not just sentiments. For me, DEI is also about diversity of thought and ideas. That’s why anyone who’s worked with me knows: my strapline is simple unconventional problems require unconventional solutions. Let’s listen. Let’s learn. And let’s ask: What change can I help create with these universities not just today, but long after the conference ends? Watch this space. The work continues. #AdvanceHE #DEI #HigherEducation #DiversityOfThought #InclusiveLeadership #ChangeMakers #ShaunFlores

It recommends advice and guidance about careers and post-school and college options should be improved to facilitate more considered choices. 𝗝𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗛𝗘 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆𝘀 and co-author of the annual Student Academic Experience Survey (SAES), which was the catalyst for the new report, said: "I’m delighted to see this important research further building on one of the key questions in SAES. While significant proportions are happy with their choice, these new insights provide compelling evidence that enhancing information, guidance and support for students both before and during their university journey could significantly improve outcomes. "What’s particularly valuable is seeing how perspectives evolve from undergraduate study into early careers, reinforcing the need for a more holistic approach to higher education decision-making for the benefit of all." We will publish SAES 2025 in partnership with HEPI in early June. Read 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 here: https://lnkd.in/e3DqYsM4
