⇢🌳🌍 We’re incredibly excited to announce the launch of our new report, Decoding the voluntary carbon market in 2024 and beyond, offering a new view of the market for VCM participants. The report is the 2025 edition of our annual voluntary carbon market developer overview report series, with an expanded focus this year and additional insights on carbon credit demand, prices and policies, alongside our regular analysis of the carbon project developer ecosystem. It outlines how carbon market suppliers are regearing for integrity, how compliance drivers and carbon credit claim evolution have started to reshape the market and, remarkably, how carbon market funding deals reached $16.3bn in 2024 –18 times the value of credit retirements. 🏭 This week in carbon markets: Big moves in direct air capture and a way forward for Indigenous rights in forest carbon projects. 🌳 🥅 Oxy has doubled down on direct air capture (DAC) with its acquisition of Holocene. The move expands Oxidental's tech portfolio, which already includes leading carbon project developer 1PointFive and Canadian technology firm Carbon Engineering, and signals growing consolidation in the carbon dioxide removal (CDR) space. We ask what the political landscape means for the future of DAC, with the technology's economics still heavily reliant on policy support like the US 45Q tax credit. 🌳 Meanwhile, in the forestry space, a major new study finds persistent gaps in respecting Indigenous rights in forest carbon projects and suggests a way forward. The message is clear: Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) isn’t a box-ticking exercise – it’s fundamental to both project credibility and investor risk management. 📈 Read our full take in this week’s newsletter, including market activity, news highlights and the latest carbon credit pricing data from Fastmarkets: https://lnkd.in/eA_pDRBH #carbonmarkets #CDR #DAC #netzero #carbonremoval #voluntarycarbonmarket #ESG #climatefinance #IndigenousRights #FPIC #sustainability #corporateclimateaction #climateaction

  • 🌎 This week in carbon markets: Microsoft doubles down on #BECCS and attitudes to carbon pricing policy continue to diverge on each side of the Atlantic. 🪵 Microsoft’s latest carbon removal deals – the largest in history – signal a major shift towards bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), which now makes up 74% of the company's carbon portfolio. With emissions rising from AI-driven increased energy demand, this represents a strategic bet on scalable Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR). 🏭 The takeaway for companies is clear. BECCS could become a cornerstone of net-zero pathways as costs fall, standards evolve and the market takes shape. Certain industries, such as pulp and paper, whose emissions come from biogenic sources, could particularly benefit from decarbonisation with BECCS. ⚖️ Meanwhile, policy outlooks are splitting. The US's Trump administration is looking to target carbon markets at the state level, while Germany is pushing for international credits to count towards EU climate goals – which could boost demand under the Paris Agreement's Article 6. 📩 We unpack all of this and more in this week’s Abatable carbon market update, which includes carbon price updates in collaboration with Fastmarkets. • ⭐️ This week in carbon markets: insurance is stepping up to meet rising risks and unlock critical credit supply. ⭐️ 🔍 As demand for CORSIA-eligible and Article 6 credits grows, so too does the need for specialised risk management. Kita's recent expansion of its carbon insurance capacity — from £5mn to £22.5mn per deal — is a clear signal that the market is evolving fast. 🔍 For companies navigating complex global supply chains and growing climate disclosure requirements, this matters. Insurance products will increasingly sit at the heart of credible, investable carbon credit strategies, especially in a world of shifting political, regulatory, and financial risks. 🔍 Meanwhile, US tariffs may not directly hit carbon credits, but global market volatility has implications for project financing, cross-border transactions, and the legal treatment of carbon assets. We cover it all in this week’s Abatable newsletter; from the effect of Trump’s tariffs on the VCM to the latest carbon pricing data. ⚡️ Read the full edition here: https://lnkd.in/gG9_NU9m #carbonmarkets #voluntarycarbonmarket #netzero #carboninsurance #CORSIA #Article6 #climatefinance #tariffs

  • 🚢  Carbon pricing for shipping? The IMO is finalising its strategy Next week, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will finalise its strategy for reducing emissions in international shipping—including a framework for carbon pricing. With the sector responsible for nearly 3% of global emissions, this could be a game-changer for this hard-to-abate sector. ⚓️ Carbon pricing could narrow the cost gap between conventional fuels and lower-emission alternatives. ⚓️ An IMO-led mechanism may follow a similar approach to CORSIA in aviation, but key details—like whether carbon credits will be explicitly allowed—remain uncertain. ⚓️ The strategy will align with the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy’s targets, for instance to reduce the carbon intensity of international shipping by at least 40% by 2030. Also in this week’s newsletter: 🇮🇳 India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) takes shape with new methodologies and a framework for Article 6.2 export. 💡 Abatable’s insights on how these developments could impact corporate decarbonisation strategies and the VCM.  📈 The latest market trends and carbon credit price benchmarks from Fastmarkets Read the full update here: https://lnkd.in/d8bZ2Ttk #CarbonMarkets #Shipping #NetZero #ClimateAction #CarbonPricing #VoluntaryCarbonMarket #Sustainability #CorporateClimateAction
