(purely human written, no AI were consulted)
Leadership is hard. But why is nobody talking about it? Is it such a rare skill that is accessible only by the very elites of our industry? There are so many technical meetups, presentations, showcases, events being organized, but rarely do anyone wants to discuss the big elephant in the room.
I think we need more talk about “Leadership”. Good leads are so hard to find! And yet, none of the companies or startups I have been talking to have any idea on how or even why we needed to train one.
Or even worse, dare I say, the most dreaded word for all Engineers: “Management”! Oh? You think managers are evil? Now it is your turn to become one. Your boss put so much trust in you! Perhaps, too much. Don’t fuck it up.
Admit it, your team or company needed a good leader/manager. And you are so very afraid you may not be qualified enough to become one. After all, you have witnessed a good leadership before in your career. The experience left a lasting impression on you. It made you optimistic. It gave you back the thrill of seeing your first line of code run! But it also gave you a very very high standards for leaders, managers, and bosses. Perhaps, much too high.
Leading is a scary job. And no one will admit it, less they appear weak or incompetent to their team. Hello Imposter Syndrome. With great power comes great responsibility. Except the responsibility seems so insurmountable.
But why though? There is no fundamental reasons why leaders can’t talk, discuss, plan, learn together. In fact, there are so many more books, blog posts, articles written on leadership than there are for technical topics.
Why can’t we get together and share, like the open source code we are pulling each and every day? Why can’t we come together and discuss, program, test and find out just like we do with code? Why can’t we have communities of leaders?
So this is an invitation to all Engineering Leaders, Engineering managers, CTOs, Head of Engineering, Directors of Engineering, VPoE.
Let’s all stop being so afraid. Let’s all come down from the Ivory Tower we’ve been pushed on. Let’s all agree that Imposter Syndrome is realer than real.
And let’s come and share, discuss, talk about leaderships.
Let’s make this open, like open source.
Let’s create a better environment for every other Engineers that are fortunate enough not to have to carry this burden.
Let’s figure all of this out together.
Let’s stop being so lonely.
Let’s stop being afraid to let your team down.
Let’s meet!
