Solution for outstanding surfaces when parting off
High process reliability is crucial when parting off, as parting off is often one of the last process steps in the production of turning parts. The requirements are often very high, especially for smaller turning parts that are manufactured from bar stock up to Ø 32 mm on sliding headstock lathes or multi-spindle machines. However, this is where difficulties often arise: “We always encounter the same challenges when parting off: Long winding chips, chattering component surfaces and broken tools,” explains Marc Wiesner, Product Manager for grooving and turning tools at Gühring. To ensure that the surface finishes on the plane faces still meet the high requirements in the end, reworking with a separate turning tool is often the only solution.
Marc Wiesner is certain: “Only with a tool that reliably breaks and constricts chips can we fulfil our customers’ requirements for component quality.” It is precisely these properties that characterise the parting off plate from Gühring’s System 222. The cutting insert has a specially developed chip former for materials in ISO group M. This ensures reliable chip breaking and constant chip constriction in the most important high-grade steels. At the same time, the high-precision insert seat with maximum accuracy ensures excellent process reliability.
With this special chip former and a customised cutting edge geometry, the grooving insert enables excellent surface finishes – constant values of Rz < 4 µm were achieved in internal benchmarks. For you as a user, this means that you no longer have to rework with separate turning tools, saving you time and tooling costs.
High system stability enables material savings
But these are not the only savings that are possible with the parting off plate. Normally, the grooving width of a cutting insert is based on the required grooving depth. However, the high system stability of the 2 mm grooving plate makes it possible to use it in applications where a slightly wider grooving plate is usually used. This enables considerable material savings to be made.
Special coating reduces tool wear
The cutting insert also stands out from comparable tools in terms of tool life: Gühring’s own NanoA coating offers excellent protection against wear and ensures consistently high machining quality.
Parting off in high-grade steel: indexable inserts in a practical test
A field test in which we tested our product against a comparable product from a competitor also shows that the Gühring parting off plate leads to significantly longer tool lives. The customer used the grooving plate for parting off a turning part with a bar diameter of Ø26 made of high-grade steel. The tool life was increased from 700 to 1000 parting cuts and at the same time, higher cutting parameters resulted in a shorter component runtime.
