  • 🩺 Health must be at the heart of resilience.   In Rio de Janeiro, the Operations and Resilience Center serves as a nerve center linking thousands of street cameras, sensors and rapid response systems to generate data powering public health and energy solutions. It's a powerful example of how cities can connect resilience planning to everyday well-being.   R-Cities’ Karl Astbury and Board of Directors Member Daniel Stander joined the Forecasting Healthy Futures conference in Rio to spotlight city-led action through our Urban Pulse program. They shared insights on how to leverage data to implement proactive solutions— building healthier, more equitable urban futures. Centro de Operações e Resiliência Rio (COR)

🚩For communities in Melaka, floods and extreme heat are no longer distant threats—they’re part of daily life. Neighborhoods at risk aren’t standing still—they’re taking action. Kampung Morten and Pantai Peringgit are both deeply rooted communities, driven by a shared determination to protect what matters. Resilient Cities Network, Zurich Malaysia and the Z Zurich Foundation are working with communities to co-create solutions. 🌟 It’s inspiring to see residents working hand in hand with researchers, city officials and partners to map their risks, assess their resilience and shape local solutions—preparing for the future and thriving together through #Resilience4Communities. 🎥 Watch how they’re leading the way. #VoicesOfAction

  • When it comes to risk, if it's everybody's responsibility, it's nobody's responsibility. Cities draw strength from interconnected systems. Yet, one single point of failure can become a major vulnerability. Effective coordination can turn this vulnerability into a strength. When cities, businesses, and infrastructure providers work together to address risks, we build stronger, more adaptable cities. Building future-proof, resilient cities calls for strong governance and a whole-of-society approach. 📚 Our latest publication, 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, shares insights on how the Global Risk and Resilience Fellowship brought together Greater Manchester Combined Authority, United Utilities, Resilient Cities Network, and Howden to assess flood risk across critical assets and identify cost-effective ways to respond. • 🐦🔥 With heatwaves forcing schools to suspend classes in the Philippines, extreme heat is even disrupting young peoples' education. To protect communities and children's education, Quezon City identified three schoolyards in heat and flood-vulnerable neighborhoods and is transforming their paved schoolyards into vibrant urban oases. Following lessons from Paris and other cities adopting the schoolyard oasis model, the school community plays an essential role. Students, teachers and families are offering their ideas and support to the project while learning how green spaces can curb urban heat and floods and becoming community advocates in the process. #CitiesSolveCitiesDeliver #CommunityResilience

  • 👖🌿As climate challenges intensify and the cost of living rises, a shift toward circularity is not just an environmental necessity—it’s an opportunity to create jobs, regenerate cities and strengthen local economies. Yet despite growing momentum, only 8.6% of the global economy is circular. What role do government, businesses and financial institutions play is moving these initiatives forward? Join us for our upcoming #CitiesOnTheFrontline to explore this question with: 💠Serena Pelagallo—from the Comune di Milano— who will spotlight the city's efforts to bolster circular textile and fashion initiatives. 💠Tara Shallal—from Visa’s Social Impact and Sustainability Team in Europe—who will share how digital payments are enabling circular models and helping small businesses lead the change. Our host, Nadine Burbar, will lead the conversation. Don't forget to register! ⬇️ 🔗https://lnkd.in/eSjhCUzV Co-developed by Visa Government Solutions & Resilient Cities Network

Yesterday I joined a rather excellent panel to discuss heat, health, ecosystems, infrastructure, resilience and city action at the Forecasting Healthy Futures Summit in Rio. One thing that struck me was the huge sense of alignment between the panel members, despite working in different (albeit adjacent) spheres. So now I'm really happy to count Lisa Beyer, ASLA, PLA Giselle Sebag, MPH, LEED AP ND Adriana Velasco Maddie C. as allies... ...and allies are what we all need right now. Allyship between sectors, between communities and institutions, within communities, with the progressive parts of the private sector, with academia, etc etc. My takeaway, beyond the great content we discussed, was that fostering these connections we make into productive relationships, based on trust, care, compassion and a desire to make the world a better place is perhaps one of the most important acts we can all make in what can feel like an increasingly polarised, fractured world. Your allies are out there - go seek, go nurture! 💚

We're proud to contribute to the Forecasting Healthy Futures Global Summit, kicking off today in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, under the theme “Ecosystem Solutions for Health.” This global gathering brings together leaders from across sectors to push for urgent action on climate and #health; develop collaborative strategies for #climate adaptation; and advance efforts to build more resilient, equitable systems for the future. Our Executive Director, Giselle Sebag, MPH, LEED AP ND, will be participating virtually in the IDEA LAB session on "Habitats and Heat Relief: Natural Protection from the Impact of Rising Temperatures" — a critical dialogue on how #urban #design, infrastructure, and nature-based solutions can help #cities adapt to extreme heat. Moderated by Adriana Velasco from Malaria No More, this panel brings together diverse voices working across climate, policy, and urban resilience. Giselle will be joined by global experts including Karl Astbury from the Resilient Cities Network and Lisa Beyer, ASLA, PLA from the World Resources Institute to spotlight the unique health challenges and opportunities facing cities in a warming world. Stay tuned for more! #UrbanHealth #ClimateAction

  • 🌱🍲Food is more than a basic need, it’s a connector. It brings communities together and links us to our environment, making soil health more than an agricultural or rural concern, but an essential ingredient to a healthier, more sustainable and resilient future for cities and rural areas alike. The Nutrisoil city workshop brought together practitioners to identify barriers to implementing circular urban agriculture, promising solutions and engaging farmers in making policy change. Healthy soils grow more than food – they support biodiversity, regulate climate and protect against extreme weather ➡️ Smarter urban waste systems that improve composting and policies that distinguish compost from mineral, fossil fuel-based fertilizers can repair ties between rural and urban food and soil cycles and enhance resilience. • It might seem hard to imagine, but we could live in a flooded landscape if we have to. What we cannot do is continue building the same structures and expect to be resilient and thrive as sea levels rise. These were some of the mic-drop moments from the latest #CitiesOnTheFrontline: “The Future of Infrastructure for Coastal Cities.” 🔹 Arnoud Molenaar, former Chief Resilience Officer, now with Square Floating City, shared his vision for modular floating city blocks—designed to help cities expand onto water. 🔹 Maria Stamati from MVRDV introduced adaptive design ideas like elevated walkways and flexible, flood-proof structures from the Sea Level Rise Catalogue. She also shared What If: Nederland 2100, a bold scenario for how Dutch society could shift to living with water rather than resisting it. 🎤 Big thanks to Fitsum A. Gelaye, MCP for hosting this rich conversation. Have a look at the takeaways ⬇️ and watch the full recording here: https://lnkd.in/eqSHj9Kt
