is a charity dedicated to helping families from less privileged backgrounds break away from the poverty cycle

About us

We believe that youth offending is the product of young people’s environment and not inherent in them. As such, all our work moves towards the development of “villages” with the capacity to raise children. With the support of such a “village,” young people from disadvantaged and troubled backgrounds can escape the cycle of poverty and crime and be responsible citizens. We do not define citizenship by one’s passport but by one’s willingness and commitment to be part of a “village” that looks out for its vulnerable members. “It takes a village to raise a child” and so we bring together people in the children’s family support network, their neighbourhood and those from the larger Singapore community to be that “village” and to show young people the meaning and value of responsible citizenship. In this light, our programmes are simply the “doors” by which people come to us but our work as a whole, follows a similar flow. We deescalate a crisis or problem to a point where the families can take charge; provide an environment for these families to utilise their strengths in problem-solving and finally, we find avenues for people into a community. This way, people remain in control of their difficulties, learn to become inter-dependent on family and friends and move beyond the need for professional support. • Community isn’t always found. It’s built. When Wati moved to a new neighbourhood and noticed the absence of close bonds between her neighbours, she didn’t wait for change, she created it. By opening her home and bringing neighbours together, she ensured no one felt alone. This festive season, let’s be inspired by Wati’s quiet courage and determination 💙 Your support helps us to help people like Wati build caring communities. Donate today 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/ga5XEGdX

  • 🚧 The soccer court was locked up, shutting out the boys who once gathered there. But instead of walking away, they picked up a pen. ✍️ What started as frustration turned into action - crafting a letter, shaping their words, and learning that their voices matter. The court isn’t open yet, but something more important already has: the belief that they can shape their own community. ⚽🔑 Read our boys' story 👇🏻

  • What does resilience look like? For Amelia, it’s her mom. And for her mom, it’s late nights at the sewing machine, early mornings in the kitchen, and a lifetime of turning challenges into opportunities. This edition of Another Week Beyond is special - it’s written by Amelia, a community member who generously shared her perspective on her mom’s journey. Through her words, one thing is clear - the deep respect and admiration she holds for her mother. Thank you, Amelia, for your honesty and heart in sharing this story.

  • When a community leads, magic happens. ✨ At a recent Community Conversation in Bukit Ho Swee, residents, young and old, stepped up to share their experiences, proving that everyone has something to offer. This is the Gotong Royong spirit in action, and we love to see it. 💙

  • For families with little to spare, even setting aside a small amount can be difficult. Yet, in the spirit of shared responsibility, neighbours come together through Community Tabung—a collective savings initiative that ensures every child has access to resources for health and education, regardless of their family’s financial situation. If you believe in community-driven change, reach out to us at partnerships@beyond.org.sg

  • Being an early childhood educator means different things to many, but at HSCDC, it means creating a nurturing space where every child is seen, supported, and given a fair chance at a brighter future.   With our small teacher-to-child ratio, we provide the attention each child needs to thrive. By working closely with families and the community, we ensure that every child, no matter their background, gets the healthy start they deserve. 🍎   Join us in making a difference today.

  • 🌟 True leadership is about empathy and calm in the face of conflict. 🌟 Amir once struggled with his temper, but when a futsal argument erupted, he stepped in as the peacemaker. His quiet leadership turned conflict into growth, not just for him, but for everyone around him. Let’s continue to create spaces where young people like Amir can grow, lead, and make a difference in their communities. 💪

  • Change doesn’t happen by force, sometimes it happens when we meet people where they are. For James, that meant starting with Roblox. 🎮 Our volunteer, Larry, showed us that with patience, respect, and the right support, growth follows. 💡 If the work we do resonates with you, consider joining us as a volunteer. Together, we can help more kids like James find their way in life.

  • What is community? This is a question that shapes much of what we do at Beyond. Building a thriving community isn’t just about solving problems or organizing activities — it’s about creating spaces where people can connect meaningfully, share ideas, and take ownership of their collective future. Community development often begins with small, intentional steps. Our “Community Day” is one such step. This isn’t just a celebration, but part of a process — a chance for residents to collaborate, discover their strengths, and build something meaningful together. Our last Community Day of 2024 was held in Ang Mo Kio and serves as a great example of the positive impact such events have. Residents of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences stepped up to share their ideas on how to make this a memorable event. Some were eager and outspoken; others were hesitant at first. But little by little, everyone found a way to contribute. What makes our Community Days special isn’t that they go off without a hitch because they rarely do. Disagreements pop up. Schedules clash. People have different visions. But working through those challenges is part of the magic. When people practice listening, problem-solving, and collaboration, they’re inadvertently also strengthening their community. This particular Community Day was a reflection of what the community had to offer. From the waffle booth run by families to snacks prepared using old recipes shared by neighbours – all of it came from the people who live there. No third-party vendors or outside contractors — just neighbours working together. But the big hit of the event wasn’t the food and games. It was in the connections made. Neighbours who barely knew each other before, now greet one another in the hallways as friends, willing to offer a helping hand when it’s needed. And the teens who helped run Community Day activities gained confidence in their ability to lead. That’s the power of community development. It’s not about one big moment but about creating opportunities for people to gather and build relationships that last. At Beyond, we believe in the strength and potential that already exists in every community. Our role is to support, guide, and continue to create situations where people can see that strength in action. We believe this is what the world needs, one neighbourhood at a time. If you believe in this vision, please consider supporting us. Your contributions will help us to continue creating spaces where communities can flourish. Not just for a day, but for a lifetime 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/gWskjBvm AWB - 2502 Written by Shariffah, Community Worker
