Today, the Algorand Foundation, in partnership with World Chess, is excited to share a proposal for a ‘Universal Chess Passport’— a decentralized identity system designed for the 600 million+ people who play chess globally. Right now, the chess world is fragmented. Online platforms, in-person tournaments, and national federations all operate separately, each with their own logins, accounts, and records. The universal chess passport aims to change that. ✅ One secure identity across platforms ✅ Verifiable ratings, titles, and achievements ✅ Faster tournament registration ✅ Cross-platform reputation and fair play history ✅ Fully user-controlled and privacy-respecting Built using decentralized identifiers (DIDs) and verifiable credentials (VCs), this system empowers players to move across platforms while maintaining a trusted, unified record of their achievements. All of it remains under their control. This is more than a tech upgrade. It is a blueprint for trust in a global, digital-first sport. And it is built on Algorand. Because if AI can fabricate receipts today, how long before it can fabricate CCTV footage, medical imaging, or courtroom evidence? In a world of increasingly powerful generative AI, how do we know what’s real? This is exactly the kind of issue Algorand is being used to solve.
