A new wave of citizen assemblies is taking shape in Sweden. On 4 April, Stockholm Resilience Centre brought together 15 researchers to exchange insights and explore the role of deliberative democracy in climate action. Cases from Sweden and Denmark were discussed, including over 25 climate assemblies in Denmark—most focused on sustainability. Key topics included the role of communication design, a growing database of Swedish cases, and the urgent need for local solutions. As these assemblies grow in number and significance, understanding their potential and limitations is becoming increasingly important for guiding the climate transition. 🌿 Investing in Nature for Human Prosperity 🌿 This week, we were honoured to host an inspiring seminar with Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility. Rodríguez— widely recognised as a pioneer behind Costa Rica’s groundbreaking environmental reforms —shared compelling insights on how strategic investments can drive both ecological recovery and human prosperity. Drawing from Costa Rica’s success story, he highlighted three key elements that made the transformation possible: 1️⃣ Eliminating harmful policies that encouraged deforestation 2️⃣ Establishing strong, integrated governance over all natural resources 3️⃣ Implementing a carbon tax and a Payment for Environmental Services system to reward conservation Read the summary and watch the full seminar recording here: https://buff.ly/3Anutz7 Albert Norström, Earth Commission, Garry Peterson, Michele-Lee Moore, Ashanapuri Hertz, SwedBio, Laura MacInnis

“Swedish government, you are failing our children.” This is the message from Line Gordon, Elin Röös, Johan Rockström and other researchers in response to the new Swedish Food Strategy that was recently presented. While the new strategy provides important initiatives for preparedness, competitiveness and exports, it neglects the urgent need to reduce emissions from food and improve public health. The authors call on the government to: 1. Prioritize public health in food policy 2. Include climate action in preparedness 3. Involve more voices in decision-making Read the full debate article in Swedish Aftonbladet: https://buff.ly/X7h7avy Stockholms universitet, SLU - Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet, Martin Persson, Chalmers tekniska högskola, PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Stefan Swartling Peterson, Karolinska Institutet, Makerere University, Peter Bergsten, Uppsala universitet
