Smarter Grids: Local flexibility benefits battery owners, grid operators & our electric future ⚡⚡ Local flexibility markets are proving to be a significant asset in modernizing our power systems. This winter in western Sweden, owners of batteries and other flexible resources actively contributed to better grid utilization while simultaneously generating revenue through the local flexibility market "Effekthandel Väst", run by Göteborg Energi Nät and Mölndal Energi Nät. Over 500 battery systems connected via CheckWatt and owned by households and companies delivered a total of 7.6 megawatts of flexible capacity to the local grid. A typical 10 kW residential battery earned approximately SEK 740 net during the season through this initiative. These batteries also provided the frequency containment reserve FCR-D ancillary service. For the two services combined, the average total income reached around SEK 1,800 over roughly three months – nearly 60 percent higher than for batteries solely providing FCR-D. At CheckWatt, we are actively involved in advancing local flexibility markets. Our participation in a direct agreement with Kinnekulle Energi and on E.ON's flexibility market, E.ON Switch, has provided valuable learnings. We are engaged in constructive dialogues with numerous grid operators to optimize future flexibility deployments. Power grids need to be sized to meet the single highest peak demand hour of the year, and building infrastructure to accommodate for that hour is costly and time-consuming. Local flexibility markets offer a smarter alternative. By enabling batteries and other flexible resources to inject power or reduce consumption during peak demand – In Sweden that generally means the coldest winter hours – we can avoid unnecessary grid reinforcements and facilitate faster connections for new customers. This accelerates electrification efforts and offers a more cost-effective pathway to a fossil-free future. Looking ahead, driven by EU legislation and the accelerating pace of electrification, we anticipate that the procurement of local flexibility will become a crucial strategy for virtually all local grid operators in Sweden to mitigate expensive grid expansions. We have exciting news to share: CheckWatt has signed an agreement to be acquired by Emaldo Group! “We are still only at the beginning of where renewable energy generation, transport and industry electrification, along with battery storage, will take us. CheckWatt will have to continue to reinvent and innovate in order to push ahead, and now, together with Emaldo, we have secured the resources to do so,” said Dan-Eric Archer, CEO of CheckWatt. CheckWatt’s ability to work with a wide range of manufacturers of batteries, other types of energy assets as well as many installation partners, has been paramount in its expansion in Sweden and Europe. All these collaborations, including CheckWatt’s service agreements to flexibility asset owners, and with energy market stakeholders will continue unchanged. The agreement is subject to regulatory approval. Read more in our press release: https://lnkd.in/dvuc-fFp

CheckWatt grows by 150 percent ⚡⚡ We are excited to announce that CheckWatt continues to grow at a rapid pace. In 2024, our revenue increased to 277 million SEK (corresponding to around €24 million), a growth of a full 146 percent compared to the previous year! The largest portion of the money we generate goes to our customers who own the resources we manage, the main source of our revenue. At the end of 2024, we managed three times the battery capacity – 270 megawatts – compared to a year earlier, and we are one of the leading players in the Nordic region. We look forward to further exciting developments in 2025, with a sustained focus on innovation and intensified international expansion. Sweden sets fossil-free electricity record ⚡🌳 Last year, Sweden set a new record for fossil-free electricity generation, with the EU's lowest emissions and lowest electricity prices. A stunning 99 percent of the country’s electricity production was fossil-free, with 70 percent coming from renewable sources, a share that is growing. We and our customers provide flexibility to the energy system. That flexibility is much needed to increase the share of renewable energy even further. While renewable sources such as wind and solar are excellent providers of cheap fossil-free electricity, their production varies. And as an aggregator that pools flexible energy sources such as batteries, we – and our customers – can mitigate those variations and help make wind and solar more reliable electricity providers. As we are expanding internationally – most recently to Finland – we are proud to contribute also in other countries to increase their share of renewable energy, and to phase out the fossil fuels that warms our planet 🌎 Now, ain’t that awesome?
