Om oss
Beccs Stockholm is Swedish district energy provider Stockholm Exergi’s large-scale Bio-Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) project. Beccs Stockholm’s goal is to create a world-class, full-scale BECCS facility at Stockholm Exergi’s existing heat and power biomass plant in the heart of Stockholm. Combining CO2 capture with heat recovery, Beccs Stockholm will capture and permanently store large quantities of biogenic CO2, resulting in carbon removal from the atmosphere and creation of so-called “negative emissions”. 800,000 tons of CO₂—that’s how much the facility will capture each year. That’s more than the total emissions from road traffic in Stockholm during the same period. Once the carbon dioxide is captured, it is converted into liquid form and then transported to a permanent storage site beneath the seabed. There, it mineralizes and becomes part of the bedrock. In addition to producing concrete climate benefits, Beccs Stockholm is also intended to accelerate the development of a new market for net carbon removals.

EU countries on study visit – exploring the sustainable city of the future in practice A big thank you to the Polish Embassy and the Polish EU Presidency for giving us the opportunity to share our work during their gathering of EU ambassadors to Sweden. Anders Egelrud, CEO at Stockholm Exergi, spoke about the role of district heating in a sustainable energy system, our investment in carbon capture (bio-CCS), and how we’re building solutions for future generations in collaboration with the City of Stockholm. 💡 Conversations like these matter. To inspire. To learn. And to accelerate the transition – across Europe. Thank you to everyone who joined us! #sustainability #climateaction #districtheating #bioCCS #futurecities #energytransition #StockholmExergi

Impressive milestone for Fabian Levihn PhD and Stockholm Exergi! Fabian is Associate Professor in the Economics and Management of Energy Systems at KTH. Part-time employed as a researcher in Industrial Economics and Management. Otherwise, Head of Research and Development at Stockholm Exergi and a member of the European Commission's expert group on Carbon Dioxide Removals (CDR). #KTHTogetherForImpact #Energy #carbondioxidremoval #CDR

Finally it is done, the investment decision has passed the board. 9 years ago (April 2016) I first initiated the idea that we should pursue full scale permanent negative emissions at Stockholm Exergi by applying #BECCS at the newly built CHP named KVV8. In 2018 we were three people in the project. By year 2022 it had grown to around 20 and by beginning of year 2025 well over 70 people. Today we enter the next face when we go from several hundred thousands (yes x100’000) of hours planning and preparations into the physical construction of the facility. The project is financed through the carbon market, Swedish reverse auction subsidies and the EU innovation fund. #CDR #negativeemissions CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency Beccs Stockholm Regeringskansliet, Klimat- och näringslivsdepartementet Swedish Energy Agency https://lnkd.in/dWStFHnQ

Stockholm Exergi to build one of the world’s largest facilities for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, Beccs Stockholm Today’s investment decision marks a major milestone in enabling permanent removals and will help Sweden and the EU reach their long-term climate goals. Construction will begin immediately, with the goal of having the facility operational during 2028. "This is a historic moment for Stockholm Exergi and for the green transition. We have worked purposefully for many years to make bio-CCS a reality, and today’s decision means we are moving from plans to action. With this, we assume global leadership in the industry for permanent removals", says Anders Egelrud, CEO. Stockholm Exergi has selected Northern Lights JV as its partner for CO₂ transport and storage. This investment decision now enables Northern Lights to expand its capacity—an important step for future negative emissions projects and the foundation for what could become a new industry, positioning the Nordics and Europe as global leaders in this field. Beccs Stockholm is made possible through a combination of funding from the EU Innovation Fund, Swedish government aid and revenue from the private market. Sweden: A Leader in Negative Emissions & BECCS Innovation 🌱 Today, OECD - OCDE Environment Director Jo Tyndall and Swedish Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari launched the fourth OECD Environmental Performance Review (EPR) of Sweden. The report provides an in-depth analysis of Sweden’s environmental progress over the past decade, with a strong focus on climate change mitigation and negative emissions. The report featured both highlights and challenges. 🔑 A positive takeaway? Sweden is recognized as a leader in BECCS technology and for its proactive role in international climate negotiations, advocating for high-integrity carbon credit mechanisms. At today’s launch event, expert panels tackled critical topics, including climate change mitigation and negative emissions, featuring insights from our own Fabian Levihn PhD. Fabian highlighted that around 25 BECCS projects are currently at various stages across Sweden, reinforcing the country’s commitment to scaling negative emissions solutions. This effort is crucial—as OECD notes that BECCS, along with enhanced carbon sinks and international offsets, could contribute up to 15% of Sweden’s total emissions reductions needed by 2045✅

Scaling Up Carbon Removals: The Time for Action Is Now The latest report from the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change is clear: carbon removals must scale up rapidly for the EU to meet its climate goals. The report highlights key actions needed to accelerate carbon removals: 🔹 Clear policy targets to distinguish between emission reductions and removals. 🔹 Stronger incentives to bridge the gap between pilot projects and full-scale deployment. 🔹 Reliable certification frameworks to ensure transparency and environmental integrity. The EU has set ambitious climate goals, but ambition alone is not enough. We must move from plans to action. Let’s work together to make large-scale carbon removals a cornerstone of Europe’s climate strategy. 🌱 BECCS: A Growth Engine for Sweden’s Green Transition 🌱 Sweden has an incredible opportunity to lead the way in carbon removal technology - and with it, unlock new jobs and economic growth. According to a study by Implement Consulting Group, scaling up BECCS in Sweden could contribute SEK 24 billion to GDP and create 28,000 jobs across the country. Public investment in BECCS will lay the foundation for a market-driven industry, positioning Sweden as a leader in negative emissions. The demand for high-quality carbon removal is rising, especially from international companies committed to net zero. If we act now, we can build an industry that benefits both the climate and the economy. The future is carbon-negative and Sweden is ready to lead the way. 🚀🇸🇪 Read the full study here: https://lnkd.in/dYptysCY #StockholmExergi #BECCS #ClimateAction #JobCreation #GreenGrowth #CarbonRemoval

“Voluntary Compliance” of Permanent Carbon Removals is coming - but will it be a stick or a carrot? Both SBTi and ISO are expected to propose new requirements for consultation shortly, mandating that companies with net-zero targets gradually acquire permanent removals to address their residual emissions. In this blog Johan Börje, Head of Volontary Carbon Market at Stockholm Exergi, reflects over several key questions: ▪️Will mandating permanent removals deter emission reductions? ▪️How should a company's permanent removal purchases affect its customers’ Scope 3 emissions? ▪️And is this a stick vs. carrot issue?
