This technical article will discuss best practices in earthing several of the most common substation fence types. This technical article mainly applies to EHV outdoor substations; however, the principles in this article may also be applied at HV where necessary in order to ensure that touch potentials are within permissible limits. Two alternative earthing arrangements may be applied to metallic substation fences. These are independently earthed (or segregated) fence arrangement, and bonded fence arrangement. Studies suggest that the majority of the distribution substations across the world have a dearth of qualified and well-trained technicians who are specifically trained for the particular type of switchgear and assembly. Adding up the misery, the lack of proper troubleshooting tools makes the process lethargic and uncertain. Additionally, incidents like rodent attacks, water sipping in the control room, etc. accumulate to increase the power outage duration. Ironically, the rodents are the cause for around 10- 20% of power cutoff, various surveys suggest. This is directly proportional to the length of an unscheduled power outage. Another factor that might play a role in extending power interruptions is the lack of sufficient workhorse and helping hands in labour extensive rectifications. Read more https://lnkd.in/eqbt2Zsf

The long distance underground cables are the nerves of a Railway Signaling or Telecom system. If the cables connected with the system are healthy and free from any defect, it will run smoothly and efficiently. Any fault in the cable may affect the connected circuit or equipment and paralyze the train operation. Locating the cable fault by conventional methods and repairing thereafter are time consuming and require substantial manpower. The repercussions for these failures may be in the form of punctuality losses and high maintenance cost to the Railways. To save time, manpower and at the same time reduce cost and downtime, Railways need to adopt innovative techniques in cable fault localization. More info https://lnkd.in/dUqSSymY

Electrical engineers working on project execution know that switchgear erection brings many challenges, no matter the voltage level. The switchgear cannot always be assembled in the factory and shipped to the site as a complete plant, so it is usually necessary to pack the equipment in its individual cubicles, ship it to the site, and eventually erect it. Erection includes the setting in place of these cubicles, their interconnection both mechanically and electrically, and the fitting of any extra relays together with the power and control cables. The chambers may have to be filled with insulating media of different types. Read more https://lnkd.in/ecF5SCB

Despite the economic slowdown worldwide, one area of business investment that continues to post strong growth, year in and year out, is mission-critical applications, such as data centres and hospitals – which inevitably increases the infrastructure’s size. As energy prices continue to rise, harnessing power-related costs has never been more essential. Now is the time for companies to take a closer look at those tools specifically engineered to ensure such facilities maximize their power needs. Think about the typical everyday data consumption of businesses and people: Nowadays, everyone expects their Netflix to start streaming instantly, their Amazon buy to go smoothly, real-time education software, education courses, video chats with Grandpa, and regular email with attachments. This data needs to be created, handled, and kept. The modern user wants their information now, but they don’t necessarily comprehend or appreciate the massive infrastructure required to keep it all or send it around the world. This technical article explains the basic elements and their shapes/functions you can see in outdoor high voltage substations. Each operating facility inside a substation fulfils an important function, varying in shape and size depending on its location and purpose. They ensure that the total installation can be operated securely and reliably. The combination of the devices surrounding a circuit breaker – disconnectors and earthing switches and combined instrument transformers that form a functional unit with the circuit breaker – is called the switchgear bay. https://lnkd.in/gqdjGEH

The most critical characteristics of a circuit breaker are the opening and closing velocity values, along with the stroke or travel distance. They are generally dictated by the requirements imposed by contacts. The opening and closing velocities are crucial for the contacts to prevent contact erosion and contact welding. The circuit breaker stroke is fundamentally associated with the circuit breaker’s capacity to withstand the required operating dielectric thermal stresses, which has a direct relationship to the total contact gap and the rate of its expansion. The operational characteristics must be defined for each mechanism in conjunction with the circuit breaker in accordance with IEC62271-100. https://lnkd.in/dwza-skq

Selectivity study of a power system is usually considered as an advanced job for advanced engineers, mostly relay protection engineers. This article will try to get close to a few important selectivity principles in a simple manner. It’s important to fully understand that protective devices form a logical system in relation to the power system structure and its earthing system. Protective devices are the brain of a power system based on the principle of selectivity that consists of isolating the part of the network affected by the fault, and only that part, as quickly as possible, while all the other unaffected parts of the network remain energized. There are various ways of ensuring proper selectivity in electrical network protection: https://lnkd.in/e4bSdxf

The polarity indications for transformers are well established by standards that apply to all types of transformers. There are two varieties of polarity: subtractive and additive. Both follow the same rules. Power and instrument transformers are subtractive, whereas some distribution transformers are additive. The polarity marking can be a dot, a square, or an X, or it can be indicated by the standardized transformer terminal markings, the practices varying over the years. Polarity is designated by an X in this technical article. Read more https://lnkd.in/dyha2gwW

This “Study Guide” is designed to provide the electrical troubleshooter with a review of, and the mechanical troubleshooter with an introduction of, basic electrical skills needed for him/her to safely and more efficiently carry out their duties in the plant environment. After successful completion, the troubleshooter can improve their understanding of DC, AC, three phase circuits, Relays, Contactors, PLC, Electronics, and other related technology. https://lnkd.in/eNZe8Cu
