Desde a sua integração na #EU em 1986, #Portugal tem beneficiado significativamente do financiamento do European Investment Bank (EIB) em projetos que fomentam a competitividade, estimulam a inovação, promovem o desenvolvimento sustentável, reforçam a coesão social e territorial, e apoiam uma transição justa e rápida para a neutralidade climática.
A Ponte Vasco da Gama, construída há mais de 25 anos, é um marco icónico da paisagem lisboeta que, com o apoio do #EIB, mudou a vida de milhares de pessoas e revolucionou a mobilidade local.
“O financiamento do BEI no valor de 299 milhões de euros ajudou a mobilizar outras fontes de financiamento e a garantir que o projeto fosse concluído dentro do prazo e do orçamento previstos,” refere Nuno Ascenso Pires, coordenador das operações do BEI em Portugal. “O impacto deste apoio não se limitou apenas à construção da ponte, mas também teve efeitos a longo prazo no desenvolvimento económico e na melhoria da infraestrutura de transporte em Portugal.”

🌉 Built 25 years ago: Named after world-renowned Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama who marked the maritime route to India.
🏙️ An iconic landmark: The Vasco da Gama Bridge is a significant part of Lisbon’s landscape.
🏗️ Construction timeline: Took 37 months to complete, from February 1995 to March 1998.
💪 Robust design: Engineers designed the bridge to be extremely robust, capable of withstanding wind gusts of up to 250 km/h and designed to resist an earthquake 4.5 times stronger than the Lisbon earthquake of 1755.
👷♂️ Manpower and materials: About 3,300 workers were involved in the project, and 100,000 tons of steel were used in its construction.
🎉 Inauguration: The bridge was inaugurated in March 1998 to coincide with the 500th anniversary of da Gama’s legendary sea route journey.
🚗 Improved commute: The bridge improved the daily commute for thousands of people with more than 62,000 vehicles crossing the Tagus river daily.
🔄 Regional transformation: The bridge transformed the surrounding region and improved connectivity between different regions of Portugal with a significant impact on the development of the municipalities of Montijo and Alcochete.
💶 Financial support: The project received a loan from the European Investment Bank and a significant contribution from the European Union’s Cohesion Fund.
