Digitalisation is helping us lead the way towards a greener future. By enabling a more stable and resilient grid, it is accelerating the energy transition, making green electricity from multiple renewable sources a reality. Smarter networks also support decentralised energy production, meaning that every kilowatt generated on the rooftop of a building, for example, is a kilowatt that doesn’t need to travel long distances, reducing strain on distribution networks. Whether it’s the expansion of EV charging or the integration of renewables, EDP is eager to do even more with digital innovation, using it as a lever for a cleaner and more efficient future. Applications for the 7th edition of the Energy Access Fund (A2E Fund) are open! Through the A2E Fund, we support projects that promote energy inclusion in disadvantaged communities in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria and, for the first time, also in Brazil. This year, we have a total of one million euros to finance sustainable projects that promote the use of renewable energy and contribute to social, environmental and economic development in rural communities. Fabíola Souza Guedes Lisboa, a teacher at Professora Nurimar Martins Primary School, witnessed this first-hand when the school’s energy bill dropped from 3,000 to just 147 reais – freeing up vital resources for what truly matters: education. Energy has the power to empower schools, students, and entire communities, helping to shape a brighter future – because sustainability is, above all, about people. The growth of renewables, electrification, and electric mobility is vital for the planet but places added pressure on power grids. To keep the energy transition on track, we need a system that is stable, flexible, and secure. At EDP, we’re making grids smarter through digitalisation, with projects like FIRMe playing a key role. This platform enables market players to register grid needs and opportunities, facilitating real-time flexibility by adjusting energy production, consumption, or storage to maintain balance and prevent shortages or peaks. Alongside FIRMe, initiatives such as Analytics4Vegetation, which predicts vegetation growth to prevent outages, and the Open Data portal, which provides key energy insights, are transforming grid management. By leveraging innovation, we are ensuring a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable energy system. Light has the power to change lives. Before EDP brought solar energy to her community, Carliene lived in darkness with unreliable power - including a shower that caught fire if used for too long - unsafe streets, and high electricity costs. Her dream of returning to school was put on hold, as it wasn’t safe for her to leave and return home late at night without proper lighting. But now, thanks to the partnership between EDP and Litro de Luz, clean and affordable electricity powers this Favela dos Sonhos community. Because sustainability isn’t just about the environment - it’s about people. That’s why we’re committed to the energy transition. EDP has reached 15 GW in Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with some of the world's leading companies across various sectors, including power and utilities, data centers, wholesale and retail, and manufacturing. In 2024, we registered an 18% increase in capacity compared to the previous year, signing PPAs with 15 clients across Europe, North America, South America and Asia. Big tech accounted for 45% of these agreements due to the rising electricity demand for data centers, while Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) contributed 25%, highlighting the growing importance of storage in corporate PPAs.
