The Defender Association of Philadelphia is more than just a law firm. We’re the community’s lawyers.
The Defender team – more than 500 attorneys, social workers, investigators, administrators, and other staff – makes sure that everyone, regardless of income, has access to high-quality defense when facing criminal charges. Our mission-driven, client-centered model focuses on outcomes that support a fundamentally fair system that creates safer, stronger communities. Our unique model and approach give our attorneys and staff the skills and support they need to get the best outcomes for our clients. Many former Defenders go on to serve as judges, state and federal officials, and successful private practitioners.

Public safety starts with a fair and balanced justice system. ⚖️
Philadelphia’s public defenders are stretched thin—only 29 social workers for over 44,000 clients. Meanwhile, law enforcement and prosecution receive significantly more funding, leaving public defense under-resourced and overburdened.
This isn’t just a budget issue—it’s a public safety issue. When defenders lack the resources to provide adequate representation, cases take longer, jails stay full, and communities suffer.

This week marks 3 years of Driving Equality! 🚗✨ #PhillyDefenders Chief @khudson_phillydefender shared big news at Monday’s press conference: traffic stops for Black drivers are down nearly 9%!
While this is progress, the data still shows a huge discrepancy in the treatment of Black drivers. There’s still work to do, and we remain committed to pushing for real change.
