Not often we get to tell the story of metal recycling; our strategy, our vision for Aotearoa New Zealand. To be local everywhere, for everyone in our country to recycle #batteries #ewaste #metals #solarPanels #metallicPackaging. All those products and materials not able to be recycled kerbside, get recycled with us. Many of them needing special permits to manage dangerous goods, like lithium. Bank of New Zealand have been with founder Eldon Reeve and Hilary West-Reeve, backing their first steps into nationwide expansion back in 2021 and every step along the way since. Action speaks louder than words; our team year on year are achieving new milestones, recycling new products, offering new solutions for challenging materials previously landfilled. Phil Hand is now leading Phoenix's next phase of growth and development to continue to evolve and expand our recycling services for New Zealand. Phoenix Recycling Group is closing the loop in New Zealand’s circular economy and reshaping how we think about resources. As demand for raw materials continues to grow, the company is transforming scrap metal like copper, steel and brass into valuable resources that power everything from electric vehicles to renewable energy infrastructure. With support from BNZ, Phoenix has expanded from 6 to 19 sites across the country and is investing in cutting-edge, electrified machinery to reduce emissions and boost operational efficiency. We’re proud to be on this journey with them, helping New Zealand move towards a better future! Jacob Tyler Hilary West-Reeve Eldon Reeve Phil Hand

Our Product Stewardship Manager Jasmine Faulkner highlights the valuable resources that can be extracted if you recycle your batteries with us. There are a range of metals to be recycled: "For Alkaline Batteries, the recovered Zinc and Manganese By-Product is on sold as a tradable commodity for further refining, often recycled to be made into new batteries. Black mass from lithium batteries is further extracted for reuse into brand new batteries. Recycled Nickel makes raw materials for Stainless Steel. Recovered Cadmium is used for the manufacture of Ni-Cd batteries and for plating purposes" (Black mass refers to the mixture of valuable materials - like lithium, copper, manganese and cobalt) There is no myth when it comes to battery recycling in Aotearoa NZ. We have built a supply chain to ensure these batteries are circular. Phoenix is one of only two companies in New Zealand with Environmental Protection Authority NZ consent to recycle all waste battery chemistries. We are the only company with a nationwide collection network with large scale volume capacity within our permits. All batteries recycled via Phoenix are sorted to chemistry, then sub-chemistry, packaged in accordance with stringent IMDG regulations and Exported to approved recycling partners where their vital metals and REE’s (Rare Earth Elements) are recovered for reuse. The NZ Association of Metal Recyclers caught up recently with Phil Hand; now 6 months into his new role here at Phoenix. Previously Phil had built a successful career across the broader FMCG - Agri - Food Processing - Manufacturing sectors. What attracted you to Phoenix? “Few CEOs get the opportunity to learn a completely new industry. When I was approached with the opportunity, I’d had some time off and was ready for a new challenge. “I was also drawn to the fact that Phoenix plays an important role in the circular economy and is backed by ethical private equity investors, ForthCo - who specialise in investing in Kiwi companies for the good of New Zealand. The chance to contribute to such meaningful work was incredibly appealing.” How will you measure success? “Phoenix has been on an incredible growth trajectory which comes with its own set of challenges. To sustain and build on this success, we need to focus on standardising systems, processes and reporting lines. Getting the fundamentals right is crucial before we look to broaden our horizons once more. He adds. “We want Phoenix to be a workplace where employees feel valued and supported. Taking care of our people is key to achieving long-term success.” Phil also emphasised his commitment to continuing Hilary West-Reeve’s impactful sustainability initiatives and is actively exploring new opportunities for collaboration in this space. 'Although I’m still new to the metal recycling sector, my initial observation is that the industry could benefit further from increased visibility and lobbying efforts. New Zealand needs to improve its recycling rates, and collaboration with the Government is essential. For example, I’d like to see regulations mandating that solar panels cannot be sent to landfills' Jackie Gray-Parker Henry Withers Grant Graham Eldon Reeve #solarPanelRecycling #responsibleRecycling

And the good news keeps coming!! Late November 2024 Phoenix Recycling secured Aotearoa NZ's first ever hazardous waste export permit to recycle solar panels. As NZ installs more solar renewable energy systems we can now safely manage its waste stream responsibly; recovering the raw materials for reuse. We have now done our first shipment of 39,050 kgs (39.05 MT) !!! Congratulations to Jasmine Faulkner and her team for persevering to get this service and supply chain solution underway. More details to follow in the coming weeks on how to utilize our services for this hazardous waste stream. Another waste stream we can now divert from New Zealand's landfills at their end-of-life or if they have been damaged! Having a super proud major milestone moment! A new lithium battery recycling milestone has been achieved. We have now safely recovered over 100,000 kilos of lithium batteries to be recycled!! 103,258 kilos to be exact....so far since the launch of our nationwide end-to-end battery recycling service, 2 years ago. Extending a huge thank you to every consumer, community, business and organisation who have contributed their batteries to be recycled. We are local everywhere; our staff all around Aotearoa have enabled our recovery volume to increase, month on month; by collecting from our 245+ collecting locations. Contact our team if you want to be part of this recycling initiative. These batteries are recovered, recycled and processed - the recycled raw materials are used for the manufacture of the next generation of batteries. The global circular economy in action! As we are Sustainable Steel Council and Metals NZ members; we are in full support of Aotearoa NZ’s Steel sector road map to Carbon Zero. Voluntarily carbon reporting for our metal recycling sector for 5 years, we have been committed for some time to track our sustainability data for projects like these. For the good of NZ, its environment, our sector, our customers; and to support the validity of the circular economy of recycled steel. The raw material feed of greener steel; manufactured in electric arc furnaces. Toitū Envirocare #toituTogether NZ Association of Metal Recyclers
After a long gestation period the Sustinable Steel Council has pressed the GO button to commence development of our Steel Sector RoadMap to Carbon Zero by 2050. There have been increasing global initiatives in the steel sector to reduce embodied carbon in steel manufacture and it is not uncommon to see up to 70% reductions compared to a decade ago. New Zealand is well placed to draw on and benefit from this momentum as well as implementing local initiatives to further support decarbonisation. We would also like to see a shift in the embodied carbon narrative - away from the current focus on 'the life of a building' and more towards 'the life of the products' used in the buildings. The focus on 'building life' doesn't fully capture that some products look attractive at the beginning because they have less embodied carbon at the outset, but those same products can release a tremendous amount of CO2 and toxic chemicals at the end of their life. Often this occurs well beyond the decommisioning or demolition of the building structure - a historical case in point being asbestos. While we have recognised and dealt with the asbestos issue, we are still dealing with the downstream consequences, decades later, in terms of dump sites and ground contamination. We haven't yet looked hard enought at the other commonly used environmental time bomb products that our grandchildren will have to deal with. But I guess this is a different story to the Road Map - but an essential one. Sustainable Steel Council would like to recognise our RoadMap supporters, specificlly BRANZ - through the Building Research Levy, University of Canterbury's Building Innovation Parnership, and SSC member organisations SCNZ, MetalsNZ, and HERA for their generous support, and of course our SSC members who are supporting through their memberhip subscriptions and assistance in-kind. #SustainableSteel #carbonneutral #buildingproducts #carbonzero #HERA #SCNZ #MetalsNZ #BRANZ
