We are deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the earthquake in Myanmar and hold in our hearts all those who have lost loved ones. Amidst all this we are grateful that our staff and their families are safe, but the impact on our work and communities is significant. We are committed to supporting our staff, partners, and affected communities in every way we can. Please keep Myanmar in your thoughts and prayers.

  • Please join us in prayer for Myanmar, where a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake has caused significant destruction in the region. We ask for safety for the Leprosy Mission Myanmar team and their families, as well as for all those affected by leprosy. 🙏 Let us find comfort in Psalm 46:1-3: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging." May we hold onto this promise in these trying times. https://lnkd.in/gY58nRNg

  • On International Women’s Day, we’re proud to highlight the impact of the Bougainville Healthy Communities Programme (BHCP). For over 20 years, the partnership between the Leprosy Mission New Zealand and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade has helped improve maternal health, reduce gender-based violence, and empower women as leaders in Bougainville. Bougainville has very high levels of gender-based violence along with some of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the Asia-Pacific region. Through the work of BHCP, the proportion of supervised deliveries has increased to nearly 100 percent in Bana, Buin, Selu Suir, and Siwai, ensuring that mothers and babies receive the care they need. BHCP also works to combat gender-based violence by engaging men and community leaders to shift cultural attitudes and create safer, healthier communities for women. Thanks to the continued partnership between MFAT and LMNZ, BHCP continues to make a difference in the lives of women and girls in Bougainville. The programme also addresses the needs of women affected by leprosy, who go underdiagnosed due to the stigma of the disease and lack of access to healthcare. This International Women’s Day, we honour the resilience of Bougainville’s women and the ongoing work of BHCP to create a more equitable future for women and girls. • The Preventative Health (PHACE) Programme and the Climate Change Resilience Programme, both funded in partnership with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, are key initiatives at the Leprosy Mission New Zealand. These programs aim to improve the health and well-being of communities, particularly those affected by leprosy. In February, the Leprosy Mission Papua New Guinea team, which includes Nathaniel Kemino, MERL Officer, and Obert Timothy, Field Support and Training Coordinator, worked together to strengthen the Monitoring, Evaluation, Reflection, and Learning (MERL) processes of these programs. The goal is to ensure continuous effectiveness through ongoing training and field support. A significant milestone in the Climate Change Resilience Programme was the installation of two water tanks at the community health centre in Matairuka, located in the Central Province. These tanks, which were handed over on February 7th, will provide safe drinking water and improved sanitation for health centre visitors and the wider community, making a substantial impact on public health in the area.

Women affected by leprosy face unique challenges that often go unnoticed. In this series, we highlight key issues from Alice Cruz’s report and why they matter. 📌 Today’s focus: 🔹 Pregnancy & breastfeeding may trigger severe nerve damage. 🔹 Some leprosy treatments cause visible skin changes, impacting women’s social lives. 🔹 The lack of research leaves many questions unanswered. We need gender-sensitive health policies that address the unique challenges women with leprosy face. 📖 Read more in Alice Cruz’s report: https://buff.ly/42Ai6iT #GenderAndLeprosy
