There's a lot to gain for EV owners and society from bidirectional charging of electric vehicles. 1.5 million electric vehicles are expected to be on Australian roads by 2030. Harnessing the flexibility potential of these 'batteries on wheels' can reduce electricity costs not just for EV owners, but for everyone using the electricity system. To make bidirectional charging (including #V2G) work, ensuring that consumers can access fair value for the services they provide, such as enabled by dynamic energy and network pricing, and clear direction on interoperability and standards are needed, as outlined in this new National Roadmap for Bidirectional EV Charging in Australia. Commissioned by Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) / RACE for 2030 and delivered by enX consulting, led by Jon Sibley, the roadmap is based on stakeholder workshops, a background report (to which I contributed European insights) and modelling of V2G benefits to the Australian energy market and distribution networks. Well worth exploring the three documents for non-Australian audiences too!
