💶 Grant Available for Technological Innovations in Machine Perfusion Good news for companies, research institutes, and healthcare organizations: the new IMPACT-program offers co-funding for initiatives that support improving organ transplantation by means of advanced machine perfusion technology. 👍 The Program has received €1.2 million in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) funding from the subsidy scheme by Top Consortium for Knowledge and Innovation - Life Sciences & Health (TKI-LSH aka Health~Holland). The initiative is set to improve organ transplantation by enhancing organ preservation, assessment, and repair. This initiative brings together leading academic institutions, medical centers, and private sector partners to push the boundaries of machine perfusion technology. The IMPACT Program encourages researchers, industry partners, and healthcare institutions to participate in this initiative. 📢 The FORESIGHT PPP PROGRAM opens for applications! 🎯 FORESIGHT aims to transform Drug Development with Molecular Imaging for Faster, More Effective, and Personalized Treatments. in Oncology, Autoimmune diseases, Cardiovascular diseases And Neurodegenerative diseases. 🕵 Researchers guided by the program coordinators Elisabeth (Liesbeth) de Vries of the UMCG, Guus A.M.S. van Dongen (Amsterdam UMC), John Haanen (The Netherlands Cancer Institute / Antoni van Leeuwenhoek), and Peter H.N. De With (Eindhoven University of Technology) are bringing together unique knowledge of tracer development, bioengineering, imaging and data analysis/AI to perform (pre)clinical molecular imaging studies. 💰 The Top Sector Life Sciences & Health (Health~Holland, Ministry of Economic Affairs) has made available €9 million subsidy for public-private partnerships within the Foresight PPP program between 2025 and 2032. 🧑⚕️An increasing number of patients are living with kidney transplants for longer periods of time due to improvements in transplant success rates. As a result, life after transplant has gained more attention.   Unfortunately, the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of kidney transplant recipients is lower than that of the general population. To improve this, it is crucial to identify factors that influence HRQoL. That’s why Tim Knobbe aimed to identify new factors that determine health-related quality of life after kidney transplantation for his PhD research. Doing so, Knobbe aimed to find potential targets for interventions to enhance HRQoL.   Did he succeed? Great scientific news! Research by Angel J. Ruiz-Moreno and Jingyuan Fu developed a novel tool to predict chemical transformation that can be made by human and bacterial enzymes.  When applied to over 1,000 orally administrated drugs, the study predicts drugs that can be either metabolized by human, gut microbes or both. The results are now published in Microbiome. The tool MicrobeRX, developed by Ruiz-Moreno et al., generated over 68,000 chemical reactions rules for substrate-enzyme-product relationships from both human and microbial reactions. Organized by our three research institutes led by Debbie van Baarle, Marco Demaria and Tineke Oldehinkel and with opening speech by Wiro Niessen. A day dedicated to groundbreaking science, collaboration, and real-world impact. From thought-provoking keynotes by Irene Heijink, Rob Coppes, and Marco Antonio Carvalho Filho to the Pitch4Impact competition, where early career researchers showcased their research—this event was a true testament to the breadth and depth of research at UMCG. 👏 A huge round of applause to all the pitch speakers, including Silvia Ciampelli, M.A, M.Sc voted winner by the public, Oleksandra Ivashchenko, Jinxiao Li, Guinevere S.M. Lageveen-Kammeijer, Boshi Wang, Rowie Janssen, Luis Silva Lagos, Victória Trindade, and Federica Sarno. How can we improve care for adults with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour in the Netherlands? That is the question Eke Bruinsma aimed to answer with her PhD research. To do so, she conducted multiple studies.   First, a meta-analysis demonstrated that certain non-pharmacological interventions are effective in reducing challenging behaviour. Subsequently, a Dutch positive behaviour support (PBS) training programme for support staff was developed and evaluated in a large-scale trial.   Through interviews and focus groups, Bruinsma learned what support staff and PBS trainers experienced in practice. UMCG researcher Charalampos Tsoumpas has been awarded a €1.5 million Vici grant from NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) to develop methods for significantly reducing radiation exposure in PET/CT scans—without compromising image quality. 🔬 Why does this matter? PET/CT scans are vital for diagnosing diseases like cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s, but radiation limits their use, especially in children, pregnant women, and clinical research. 🤖 The power of AI Tsoumpas' team will explore how AI can enhance imaging even with lower radiation doses. If successful, this could reduce radiation by a factor of 30, making diagnostics safer and accelerating drug development.
