As US Terminates Funding, Nigeria Shifts Focus to Sustain HIV Progress Happening live at the Ministry of Health, Nigeria—our Principal Investigator, AbdulMuminu Isah, PharmD, PhD, FPCPharm (Infec. Dis.) CSCA, says, “There are viable alternatives, and it is unfortunate that we are considering them only at this stage.” He recommends forming partnerships with other successful countries in the Global South, incorporating HIV treatment into the national health insurance scheme, and engaging the private sector to improve service delivery. Nigeria, which has the highest number of people living with HIV/AIDS in West and Central Africa and the fourth-highest globally, has announced plans to begin domestic production of HIV commodities, including test kits and antiretroviral drugs, by the end of 2025. At PeCHIVReT, we remain committed to research-driven solutions that prioritize person-centered care in the fight against HIV. The challenges ahead are significant, but through innovation and collaboration, Nigeria can build a more resilient and self-sufficient HIV response. A sustainable research space is dependent on the quality of the future generation of researchers. So, it was an honour to accept to serve as a facilitator at a webinar organized by the Clinical Pharmacists Association of Nigeria (CPAN) for its first cohort of the CPAN Mentorship Programme. We introduced the concept of research in Clinical Pharmacy in Nigeria, and hope to build up on the foundation at a later date.
