More than half of the world's GDP is moderately or highly dependent on nature and its services. From a global standpoint, ecosystem services are estimated to be worth $125 trillion annually, and they support key economic sectors such as the agriculture, fishing, forestry, and tourism that employ about 1.2 billion people. To encourage nature-positive outcomes in Kenya, KBA with funding support from WWF-Kenya and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is currently undertaking a nature positive demand and supply study. The study will quantify the investment and financing opportunity available in advancing a nature positive economy by leveraging on banks role in directing their financial flows to nature positive business models. Last week, KBA together with its partners, held a validation workshop on the study that drew attendance of representatives from banks, civil society, and development finance institution. KBA Director of Research and Policy, Dr Samuel Tiriongo (PhD) delivered the welcoming remarks alongside, GIZ Agriculture Economy and Financial Advisor, Kennedy Okech and WWF Kenya Head of Conservation Programs, Jackson Kiplagat. The workshop was moderated and coordinated by KBA Sustainability Manager, Roselyne Njino.

How many Ramsar Sites do we have in Kenya? If you said six — you’re absolutely right! Kenya is home to six Ramsar Sites, which include: Tana River Delta, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Lake Baringo, Lake Elementaita and Lake Bogoria. Ramsar Sites are wetlands recognized under the Ramsar Convention for their international importance, particularly for biodiversity conservation and human well-being. These ecosystems provide a wide range of services — from fish and papyrus reeds, to clean water, flood control, climate regulation, and recreational opportunities. #WWFKenya #PeopleNatureEconomy #FunFacts

This Woman Crush Wednesday, we celebrate Mary Waithera—a true champion for nature and her community! Mary grew up in Gama Juu, where the forests once thrived. In the 1970s, seeking fertile land, her community cleared trees for maize farming. At first, it seemed like the right choice—good harvests, hope, and progress. But over time, the land suffered. Soil erosion, landslides, and unpredictable rainfall threatened their way of life. Then came a turning point. WWF-Kenya stepped in, providing public education and community support for restoration. Mary and her community learned the true value of trees—not just for farming but for their future. This realization sparked a movement to restore their forests and rebuild what was lost. Today, Mary is leading the charge with Gama Juu Community Forest Association (CFA), proving that change is possible when communities come together for a shared purpose. Let’s celebrate Mary’s resilience and the inspiring work of Gama Juu CFA. #WomanCrushWednesday #WWFKenya #ConnectingPeopleEconomyNature

Mangroves are vital for coastal communities, marine life, and climate resilience. But they are disappearing fast. Through the Save Our Mangroves Now!3 (SOMN!3) project, WWF-Kenya, in partnership with Wetlands International and IUCN, is working with governments, conservation experts, and local communities to reverse mangrove loss in the Western Indian Ocean region. In 2024, the Kenya Global Mangrove Alliance Chapter was formalized, bringing together WWF-Kenya, IUCN, Wetlands International, The Nature Conservancy, and Conservation International. This partnership is strengthening the implementation of the National Mangrove Ecosystem Management Plan and polices at national and regional level to protect and restore mangrove ecosystems. At this year’s SOMN!3 workshop, experts and stakeholders highlighted how collaboration and data-driven solutions are key to securing the future of mangroves. By working together, we can ensure mangroves continue to protect coastlines, support biodiversity, and sustain livelihoods.
