Growing Prosperity Through Trade
About us
TradeMark Africa (TMA), formerly TradeMark East Africa, is a leading African Aid-for-Trade organisation that was established in 2010, with the aim to grow intra-African trade and increase Africa’s share in global trade, while helping make trade more pro-poor and more environmentally sustainable. TMA operates on a not-for-profit basis and is funded by: Belgium, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Canada, Denmark, the European Union, Finland, France, Ireland, the Mastercard Foundation, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. TMA works closely with regional and continental inter-governmental organisations, national Governments, the private sector, and civil society. Since its inception, TMA has delivered substantial gains for trade and regional economic integration in East Africa and the Horn of Africa, including a reduction of 16.5% in cargo transit times on the Northern Corridor from Mombasa to Bujumbura, and a reduction of an average of 70% in the time taken to cross selected one stop border posts. TMA officially launched its continental-wide shift and rebrand in West Africa in January 2023, with Ghana being the first country of operations in the region. In 2022, TMA set up a catalytic finance company – Trade Catalyst Africa – that will pilot commercially viable projects for creating trade infrastructure (both physical and digital) as well as increasing access to Trade Finance for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Both TCA’s and TMA's headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya. Offices are in: EAC Secretariat - Arusha, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda, Somaliland, Tanzania, and Uganda, with operations in Mozambique, South Sudan and Zambia. The world is quickly becoming conversant with tariffs. But there are equally restrictive hurdles to trade known as non-tariff barriers (NTBs). For example, for successful trade, trading partners MUST speak the same language – standards, which denote expected quality by the importing country that the exporting country must adhere to. But often, standards aren’t met and collaborative remedies become essential to restore robust trade. Maize Lethal Necrosis Disease (MLND), a serious viral disease, has been reported in both Tanzania and Zambia, posing a significant threat to maize production and food security. Symptoms include leaf mottling, stunting, and plant death. There being no known cure makes control measures, including destruction of infected plants, use of disease-free seed, and monitoring for vector insects, critical in stemming spread of the disease. For intra-Africa maize trade, application of standards has been heightened to ensure quality imports and exports considering maize is a staple crop in many countries and there is a persistent need to move the grain from maize surplus (like Tanzania) to maize deficit (like Zambia, which is enduring its worst drought in four decades) countries. However, diagnostic differences between the two countries recently affected cross-border trade in maize. With support from TradeMark Africa, the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA) and the Plant Quarantine and Phytosanitary Service (PQPS), Zambia, held a bilateral meeting on Standards on 14 April 2025 at Izukanji Lodge, Nakonde. The meeting aimed to resolve trade barriers affecting maize and plant product flows due to the Maize Lethal Necrosis Disease, quality and diagnostic differences. Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to harmonizing phytosanitary protocols. Key agreements included: adoption of High-Performance Liquid Chromatographer (HPLC) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) as minimum diagnostic tools; joint Standard Operating Procedures for diagnostics; support from TPHPA to train PQPS on genome sequencing and diagnostics; and development of a harmonized phytosanitary protocol to cover maize, soy, and potatoes. ePhyto integration and mutual recognition of inspection results were also prioritized. Next steps include finalizing the maize trade protocol by May 2025, commissioning the upgraded lab in Nakonde, staff training sessions, and launching a joint SPS Technical Working Group. The meeting marked a turning point in regional SPS coordination, with strong focus on diagnostics, digital systems, and practical collaboration. #SPS #Standards #MaizeLethalNecrosisDisease #Zambia #Tanzania #IntraAfricaTrade #KeepAfricaTrading Dave Beer Allen Sophia Asiimwe Elibariki Shammy Andrew Edewa Hellen Mwarey Jovin Mwemezi Emilly O.
