A change of strategy from microfinance payments to sending money home, a massive $10 million investment in an almost impossible quest to replace every SIM card and to recruit agents, a super agent model, a strong purpose to serve society by building products and services for them. What are the early decisions that led to the launch and success of M-PESA, and why were they made? Michael Joseph - Safaricom PLC's pioneer CEO and Sitoyo Lopokoiyit MBS - our CEO, had a conversation on M-PESA's beginnings during our 18th Anniversary celebrations. • Being reliable, always on, and secure is a commitment that requires significant investment. Every year, we invest over KES 40 billion to upgrade our M-PESA systems and ensure the best experience for our customers. This year, we’re focused on M-PESA 2.0 – the next big leap that will boost stability, capacity, and overall customer experience. By the time it’s fully rolled out, there will be zero downtime for customers. Safety and security are always our top priority. 🔐 To maintain customer trust, we stay ahead of fraudsters and cyber threats, with strong guardrails in place and ethical hackers testing our systems. We're constantly building resilience so customers can rely on our services with confidence. Dr. Peter Ndegwa C.B.S #MPESANation

Winning the #ShineKenya Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa promotion gave Jackson Habagusaba the perfect opportunity to turn his vision of helping children into a reality. 💚 At Mwanyani Primary School, students were struggling with uncomfortable seating that made it hard to focus and learn. In response, Jackson donated desks and chairs, ensuring the children now have a comfortable space to sit and truly engage with their lessons. This gift is about more than just furniture — it’s about creating a respectful and supportive learning environment where these children can grow, learn, and dream without limitations. #SisiWoteNiMabingwa #TransformingLives

Group Chief Executive Officer at Safaricom PLC Kenya and Ethiopia

Last week, I travelled to Addis Ababa 🇪🇹 for a series of strategic engagements with the Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC team, key partners and government stakeholders. One of the highlights of the trip was hosting Mr. Shingo Ueno, CEO of Sumitomo Corporation, on his inaugural visit to Ethiopia to see first-hand the progress of their investments through our global partnership. We also held a productive meeting with Eng. Balcha Reba, Director General of the Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA), where we provided updates on the current state of Safaricom Ethiopia, shared insights on emerging technology trends, and discussed our future ambitions for the communications sector in the country. Additionally, I paid courtesy visits to Government of Ethiopia representatives to review the status of our operations and engage on how we can continue to collaborate in creating a conducive environment for growth and innovation. It was a day filled with meaningful conversations, shared aspirations, and a strong reaffirmation of our commitment to Ethiopia’s digital transformation journey. Here’s a quick snapshot of how my day in Ethiopia unfolded.
