Our Deputy Executive Director, Janet Anyango, led the FIDA-Kenya family at the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, focusing on reviewing the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. While here, she shared FIDA-Kenya's experience, including the advocacy on 2/3 gender rule, dialogues with university students, Movement buildings with WROs and Women Leadership Caucuses, FIDA-Kenya Women Leadership Academy, media advocacy, multi-stakeholder engagements on women's political participation, psychosocial support to women leaders including after they lose leadership opportunities, and legal representation for election Dispute Resolution among others.

𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐉𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭. On 𝟏𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢 will deliver a ruling on 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝟎𝟕𝟓 𝐨𝐟 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐, a case challenging 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚'𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦. Currently, spouses must prove wrongdoing to get a divorce—this case questions whether that requirement is constitutional. 𝐀𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭, FIDA-Kenya and Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa (ISLA) provided expert insights comparing Kenya's laws with international trends and advocating for a 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐫, 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦. This judgment could shape the future of divorce laws in Kenya. #FamilyLaw #FIDAat40

FIDA-Kenya Chairperson, Ms. Christine Kungu, delivered a presentation on the Sexual Offences Amendment Bill 2025 during the ongoing NCAJ meeting in Mombasa. Also present is FIDA-Kenya Vice Chairperson, Ms. Miriam Bomett. FIDA-Kenya chairs the NCAJ Committee on Review of Laws & Policies on Sexual Offences.  

Safe Abortion in Kenya is an essential healthcare service, criminalising it undermines women’s constitutional & reproductive rights. KELIN Center for Reproductive Rights On 19th February 2025, the Court of Appeal will be hearing 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐍𝐨. 𝟓𝟗𝟒 𝐨𝐟 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟗 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐯 𝐅𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐰𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 (𝐅𝐈𝐃𝐀-𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚) & 𝟏𝟓 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 challenging the High Court ruling that upheld the 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝟐𝟔(𝟒) which guarantees access to safe and legal abortion. The Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) provided the lead advocate and technical support to FIDA-Kenya and her partners.

FIDA-Kenya salutes the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union for adopting the AU Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls. The #AUEVAWGConvention is a legally binding instrument that will address the root causes of #VAWG in Africa. The #AUEVAWGConvention is indeed a victory for women and girls.
