Preparing youth in Africa with the skills to succeed in today’s economy

About us

Africa has the world’s youngest and fastest-growing population. By 2035, the continent is poised to contribute more young people to the global workforce each year than the rest of the world combined. At Educate! we're obsessed with impact. We leverage iterative learning to build highly scalable youth employment solutions aimed at unlocking the potential of the world’s youngest continent. Educate! prepares youth in Africa to learn, earn and thrive in today’s economy by: 1) introducing an employment-focused school subject in secondary education, and 2) delivering livelihood bootcamps for out-of-school youth, with a focus on marginalized rural girls and young women. Our work has been validated by several independent evaluations, which found positive outcomes on income, employment, gender equity, family planning and sexual and reproductive health, educational attainment, and climate change resilience. To date, more than half a million youth have been meaningfully impacted across Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya, and along the way, Educate! has become the largest youth employment and skills provider in East Africa. Educate!'s long-term vision is to design solutions that measurably impact millions of youth across Africa each year.

  • In case you missed it… At this year’s Skoll World Forum, Educate! joined a roundtable of organizations leveraging data, tech, and evidence-led decision-making to improve livelihoods and drive income gains. The network of livelihood innovators aims to deepen impact through collaboration and learning. The session explored critical questions we’re all grappling with: 🔹𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀? 🔹𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀? 🔹𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗢𝗜, 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀? Imagine a life dedicated not just to observing the world's problems, but to actively addressing and solving them. 💚 ______ That was Barry Segal, the founder of Segal Philanthropies, who passed away this week at the age of 90. Beyond his success with Bradco Supply, his true legacy lies in establishing the Segal Family Foundation (now a top funder in Africa), Focus for Health Foundation, and Focus Central America—driving $22 million annually to those on the front lines. Barry's absence will be deeply felt, but his influence and vision will echo through generations. To honor his commitment to action and his legacy, his family suggests memorial contributions to support the vital work of Focus for Health grantee organizations. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dV47t_WH Even though this video is from 2019, its message of his vision remains timeless: Rest in Peace, Barry Segal.

Global Director of Research, Measurement, & Evaluation at Educate!

While my time in Chicago for #CIES2025 was short, it was definitely energizing! I had the privilege joining Mary Goretti Nakabugo of Uwezo Uganda, @Fatuma Wamala and Elizabeth Nabuyama of Kukuza Education, and Daniel Kyasanga of PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools) in a panel chaired by Daniel Omaya of SHOFCO to discuss what works in equipping young people with the skills Africa needs. I was honored to represent Educate! in such an important panel. Reflecting on the conversation, there was broad agreement that soft skills are critical - not just to teach but to assess. So many great organizations are pioneering ways to make both happen. We also looked into how to make education more practical and skills-focused, with thoughtful dialogue on ensuring assessments keep pace. A standout conversation? The balance between supporting teachers (without overburdening them) and avoiding overly prescriptive solutions. Even as the international education space navigates challenges, the tireless dedication of researchers and practitioners to advancing equitable, relevant education for every child and youth was palpable. Needless to say, the commitment of this community left me inspired. Can’t wait until next year!

Dorothy Namubiru, Educate!’s Program Manager for Out-of-School Youth in Uganda, emphasizes that trainers who understand the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the youth they serve make all the difference. • At Educate!, we're passionate about tackling big, complex challenges – and we know that no one organization can do it alone. We're grateful to collaborate with others committed to driving impact. Such a fun, fulfilling (and also exhausting 🤣) week at Skoll. Every year I feel like I need more and more time—but the deep conversations and spontaneous run-ins with so many people I love and admire always fill my cup for a long time. One particular highlight was our Livelihoods Impact Alliance session on Big Bets for Livelihoods Improvement. We brought together some of the most inspiring doers and donors using tech and data to drive income gains—Kabakoo Academies, African Management Institute, Raising The Village, GiveDirectly, Livelihood Impact Fund, The Agency Fund, and to my great delight, Educate! - alongside various other organizations including Wezesha Impact, The Global Development Incubator, Segal Family Foundation, Canva and Judith Neilson Foundation . It was a real roundtable—curious, thoughtful, practical. I learned a ton and left even more energized by the potential of this growing movement.

As a partner of EdHeroes, we’re proud to celebrate the official launch of this initiative, which aligns with our commitment to ensuring education reflects and responds to the communities it serves. ➡️ Learn more about Educate!’s localized approach to expanding economic opportunity to young people unable to access secondary school: https://lnkd.in/eDmEjuWK

Mentorship is a key component of our 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. In the Educate! model young people support their peers to develop skills, gain confidence, and take initiative in their communities. Take NABWIRE BRIDGET, for example. Through an Educate! 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 (𝗬𝗘𝗧) she learned leadership principles and gained hands-on experience in starting a business. YET equips young people with the skills and confidence to thrive on a number of different paths – whether it's 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 to inspire other youth in fulfilling their potential. Typically in their early 20s, Educate! mentors provide individualized support to younger youth. This peer-to-peer approach is especially impactful in our livelihood bootcamps, which serve youth who weren't able to complete secondary education.
