In fish farming, selecting the right pond size can make all the difference in production, efficiency and profitability. For those looking to scale up, a 1000m² pond proves to be the most efficient, providing better scalability, disease management, and higher profit margins when well managed. On the other hand, a 300m² pond is ideal for smaller operations with lower initial costs, though profit margins may be more limited. These ponds are a great entry point for small scale farmers, particularly those with fewer resources. As the aquaculture sector continues to grow in Kenya, youth involvement plays a crucial role in ensuring sustainable and thriving food systems. Through @Youth in Sustainable Aquaculture (YISA) Kenya , young farmers are being equipped with the skills and knowledge to build and manage these ponds, helping them play an active part in shaping the future of fish farming. Aquaculture in Kenya is not just about fish farming it's about securing affordable protein, creating job opportunities, and fostering sustainable farming practices. Youth led programs are not only strengthening food security but are also driving economic growth in local communities. As social enterprise to improve productivity, increase income, build an inclusive business for small-scale fish farmers
About us
We are a social enterprise targeting rural based small-scale fish farmers to improve their productivity, increase income and develop an inclusive community based aquaculture value chain. Aquarech App is a centralized database system that links key actors in the fish value chain namely; farmers, trader and input suppliers. The innovation monitors growth of fish from the time of stocking to the time of sale. It provides vital production data such as the quantity of feed fed, average daily growth, FCR, fish price, feed cost. Further to this the innovation has an inbuilt feeding regime that calculates automatically for the farmer the exact amount of feed to be fed based on water temperature, size of fish and quantity of fish. Our Objectives : To improve fish production through better data recording practices utilizing the App within the first year of operation To connect farmers and traders through a streamlined online trading platform based on the App To connect input suppliers and farmers through a customized central database hosted on the App within six months To reduce/eliminate fish for sex trade by enabling women fish traders to access fish through a verified platform free of any manipulated data or circumstances within the first harvest.

New technologies are revolutionizing #smallholderfarming across Africa. To fully realize the potential of our farms, we need to understand how these new technology solutions can help revolutionise climate-smart agriculture in Lake Victoria Basin. For two days, KijaniSpace invited key stakeholders from East Africa to the Lake Victoria Basin Climate-Smart Agriculture Dialogue at LakeHub. The workshop explored how Copernicus Earth Observation Data and technologies such as meteoblue's weather prediction data platform, AquaRech LTD's IoT water temperature sensor, Penn State Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship (HESE)'s LakeVision among other emerging climate technologies can advance smallholder farming in Africa. Further, the contributions of Lake Victoria Basin Commission/East African Community, Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology (MJNUAT) researchers, engineers, Zone01 Kisumu IoT developers, SMEs, startups, and farmer groups will ensure KijaniSpace's multi-stakeholder approach to climate smart agri-aqua culture in the Lake Victoria Basin is a success. #ClimateSmartAgriculture #LakeBasin #AquaCulture #KijaniSpace

AquaFedha’s tailored credit model (backed by AquaRech LTD & Equity Bank) assesses farmers based on production potential, not just conventional banking metrics. 2. Fueling Commercial Transition Subsistence → Commercial Farming: Credit allows farmers to: ✔️ Buy high-quality fingerlings & feed in bulk (lowering costs). ✔️Invest in HDPE cages and Large scale ponds to increase yield ✔️Adopt technology & Data (Mobile app). ✔️Meet market demand consistently (supply local fish traders). 3. Strengthening Africa’s Food Systems Small/medium fish farmers produce ~60% of Africa’s aquaculture output but remain trapped in poverty due to lack of capital. AquaFedha aligns with the African Food Systems by ensuring: ✔️Nutrition security (affordable protein for local communities). ✔️Job creation (women & youth in fish farming & processing). ✔️Climate resilience (funds for sustainable practices ) 4. Partnership Power: AquaRech LTD + Equity Bank Limited + TechnoServe AquaRech LTD’s expertise in aquaculture training & technology ensures farmers use loans effectively. Hello Technical Tuesday! Let's talk about tilapia attraction & reproduction How Do Tilapia Attract Mates? Tilapia have an interesting courtship process: 🏠 Males build nests; they dig circular depressions in the substrate to attract females. 🎭 Color changes; males turn brighter or darker to show dominance. 💃 Dance displays; males perform side to side movements to impress females. How Do Tilapia Reproduce? Tilapia are mouthbrooders, meaning the female carries the fertilized eggs in her mouth until they hatch! 🥚 Egg laying; the female lays eggs in the nest. 🐠 Fertilization; the male fertilizes them externally. 👄 Mouth brooding; the female picks up the eggs and keeps them safe in her mouth for about 5-10 days until they hatch. 🔄 Parental care; even after hatching, baby fish (fry) sometimes return to their mother’s mouth for protection. How to Tell Male & Female Tilapia Apart Males - Larger with a pointed genital papilla. - More colorful, especially during mating. - Aggressive & territorial. - No egg-laying opening. Females -Rounder belly with a two hole genital opening (one for eggs, one for excretion ). - Less colorful, smaller. - Mouthbrooding behavior (if carrying eggs).
