“The role of the CSO has evolved to ensure that we, as an operation, as a business, remain a key driver of positive change in society.” We are proud to have supported Economist Impact’s Sustainability Week, held last month in London. Group Chief Sustainability Officer Mika Nabeshima took part in a panel on the evolution of the CSO role. She outlined how what was once seen as a complementary function, a form of giving back to society, has now become a core driver of long-term value creation, and therefore of sustainable growth. The insurance industry is meant to serve as a shock absorber for society, with a responsibility to be there for people and societies in their times of need. Doing so long term requires us to integrate the lens of sustainability throughout our business, ultimately contributing to weaving resilience into the very fabric of society.

Our Next Generation Global Leadership Program cohort was just in Tokyo for their second program offsite. Throughout the week, participants explored Tokio Marine’s unique history and culture, gained insights into our global strategy, and presented the results of their global wellness synergy project to the Global Wellness Steering Committee on the subject of “Sparking Joy at Work". The project involved two global virtual events featuring renowned speaker and decluttering expert Jennifer Albertini, who uses Marie Kondo’s patented KonMari Method. The offsite also featured a new session on Tokio Marine’s sustainability strategy and a unique presentation on disaster planning delivered by Daisuke Kato from the Tokio Marine Research Institute. The participants took part in cultural experiences, including a traditional Japanese calligraphy lesson and a tea ceremony. They also took a special trip to an earthquake museum—a stark reminder of our purpose as an insurance group to be there for our customers and society in their times of need. Twelve companies within the Group were represented, including: First Insurance Company of Hawaii, Tokio Marine HCC, Philadelphia Insurance Companies, PURE Insurance, Reliance Standard Life, Tokio Marine America, Tokio Marine Management Australasia, Tokio Marine North America Services, Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd., Tokio Marine Seguradora, Tokio Marine Compañía de Seguros, S.A. de C.V., and Tokio Marine NEWA. Congratulations to all participants on completing the program’s second offsite. #TokioMarine #TokioMarineGroup #GlobalLearning #NextGen #InspiringConfidenceAcceleratingProgress

According to recent estimates the probability of a magnitude 7 earthquake directly under Tokyo within the next 30 years stands at 70%. The probability of an M8–9-class earthquake along the Nankai Trough within the next 30 years is at approximately 80%. And yet, a recent survey conducted by the Tokio Marine Research Institute shows that Japanese households do not have enough stockpiles to withstand the aftermath of a major earthquake. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) requests its residents to stockpile food and daily necessities sufficient for at least three days, and even recommends stockpiling one week's worth in preparation for the need to shelter at home. To find out more about the predicted damage a major earthquake could do to Tokyo's infrastructure, as well as what and how much to stockpile, check out our latest article from the Tokio Marine Research Institute: https://lnkd.in/g36mv4aM

“Insurance is first and foremost a promise. Not just to provide financial support in the event of a loss, but to stand with communities and help businesses get back on their feet when disaster strikes. However, simply replacing old with new, like for like, is not sufficient. Communities are facing increasingly extreme risks and our weather is becoming more volatile. We have to help those communities build back better, become more resilient, and be better prepared for the future by facilitating innovation.” Earlier today, Mika Nabeshima, our Chief Sustainability Officer, took part in a panel at The Economist 10th Annual Sustainability Week in London. With fellow panellists Virginie Helias, CSO, Procter & Gamble,Annette Stube, CSO, the LEGO Group and Anke Ehlers, Managing Director International Sustainability, ALDI SÜD HOLDING, she contributed to a lively discussion about the Evolving role of the CSO, in which she explained the vital role to be played by insurers in mitigating the risks of climate change and creating a more sustainable future. We’re delighted to have sponsored the event, bringing together business leaders, policy makers and NGOs from across the world as part of global efforts to reconcile business profitability with sustainability. #Sustainability #TokioMarineGroup #TheEconomist

Despite the extreme damage hailstorms can cause, we still do not have a method to accurately and reliably predict their onset. We do, however, know a lot about how and when hail is likely to form. According to experts, rather than waiting for a hail forecast, the best way to prepare against hail is to learn the signs. Find out more in our latest article by the Tokio Marine Research Institute: Understanding and Getting Ready for When It Hails 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gsD-rJjJ
