🚀 Next-gen rocket tech from Hokkaido Letara Ltd., a startup from 北海道大学 Hokkaido University, has secured ¥650 million in funding from ANA Trading, SMBC Venture Capital, and others to develop a solid plastic fuel rocket engine—safe enough to touch with your bare hands, yet matching the power of conventional (and highly toxic) liquid hydrazine engines. This innovation isn't just about safer engineering. By drastically lowering the safety and cost barriers of rocket manufacturing, Letara is opening the doors to more accessible space development—for smaller players, developing countries, and beyond. The engine is set to fly on an inter-orbit vehicle as early as 2026. The future of space propulsion might just be made in #Hokkaido. 🌍💫 Read Full:https://lnkd.in/grJxnE8s #Space #Innovation #Funding #Startup

#Ad paid and presented by Japan Cabinet Office Meet David and Aril. Both decided to build their own start-ups in opposite ends of Japan (Sapporo and Fukuoka respectively), far from their original homes in other parts of the world.   David Andrew Quist, a microbiologist from Norway, says there's no better place to base his business than in Japan’s Sapporo City, rich with food industry suppliers, start-up support systems, and breathtaking expanses of nature. With his start-up Norwegian Mycelium (NoMy), David has his sights set on reshaping entire food systems with fungi. Aril Aditian, who's from Indonesia, has been in Japan for about ten years, and has now founded his start-up, NOSUTA, there with his partner Viko Gara. They dream of creating opportunities for skilled Indonesian foresters to assist Japan with forest management.   “Fukuoka City has been very helpful in helping us set up our business here, connecting us with lawyers, with the local networks,” says Viko. But the part most invaluable to him, is how the City helped him find schools for his children. Sapporo, Fukuoka, Osaka, and Tokyo are Japan’s specially designated zones specifically catered to helping businesses and innovators succeed through. Will you take the leap?

Earlier this month, members of the Catalyst Now Governing Council and the Global Secretariat gathered in Bogotá, Colombia, for a truly momentous occasion. The event brought together a rare, multi-faceted agenda: engaging with Colombia's vibrant high-impact ecosystem, holding the annual Governing Council meeting, celebrating the Catalyst Now Awards 2025, and hosting the first in-person team retreat of the global Secretariat. The Asia Pacific region was strongly represented by distinguished Governing Council members, including: founding member and immediate past co-chair/advisor of the ASEAN Chapter, Jack Sim; Southeast Asia Chapter co-chair, Faiz Kamaludin; Oceania Chapter co-chair and Australia Chapter advisor, Asha Murphy; Oceania and Aotearoa Chapter co-chair, Jason Jacobs (雅各布斯); and Asia Pacific Coordinator, John Uminga. We were also honored to have Japan Chapter co-chair, Shugo Urata, attend on behalf of STARTUP HOKKAIDO, a special honoree at the Catalyst Now Awards 2025. The event highlighted the collective strength of our global network and the exciting future ahead for Catalyst Now.

We're one week removed from HEEX 2025, which makes it long overdue for a little summary post of this year's Hokkaido Innovation Week events 👏 For this year's HIW, we hosted two events: HEEX 2025, and Brews & Complaining 🎤☕ HEEX 2025 was everything we had hoped it would be, and was in many ways the most "complete" version of the original HEEX event vision: The pitch relay showcased a diverse array of startups either based in, or inbound toward, Hokkaido, focusing on what they needed to take their startups to the next level🎤 The new event format addition, our Hokkaido Entrepreneurship Fireside Chat, added a completely different level of depth to the event, with 1 hour of our panelists (with some audience members even joining the panel briefly) sharing their experiences running a company in Hokkaido, and discussing what needs to be next for our ecosystem to keep on growing and flourishing 🔥 Combined with the drink selection provided by local entrepreneur Matt Chen (Chen&Coffee), the beautiful venue provided by our sponsor TREEBASE, and the amazing, super engaged audience, this HEEX event rendition managed to cover all the main reasons that our organization exists: To shine a spotlight on our local startups, and to strengthen and grow our ecosystem 👏 Brews & Complaining on the following day, had a much more humble aim, which it managed to deliver on: Get the entrepreneurship community together for some high quality brews, and some high quality complaining ☕ Once again with TREEBASE providing a comfortable environment, and lovely views of the heavy Sapporo snowfall, and with Matt Chen providing the brews 👏 The event was peaceful, or at least as peaceful as an event devoted to complaining can be, and the timeless combination of good coffee and venting hopefully allowed everyone to face another day of entrepreneurship struggles, with renewed energy and fighting spirit 💪🔥 We're proud of the two events we hosted this year, and knackered from the effort it took to make everything come together. However, there's no rest for the wicked, and even less for entrepreneurs, so we're already scheming our next events and initiatives - make sure to follow to keep up with future HEEX projects! A massive, massive thank you to STARTUP HOKKAIDO and the Hokkaido Innovation Week team for once again letting us host a set of HIW spin-off events - it means the world to us! Thank you to Mr. Matt Chen of Chen&Coffee for providing both brews and good vibes to both events - we hope to collaborate with even more local entrepreneurs in the future, of course with Matt included! And finally, a massive thank you to our sponsors TREEBASE and Guramu Software - it's thanks to generous sponsors like them, that we can keep growing the scale and ambition level for our events 🙇♂️ The Hokkaido ecosystem is small, but mighty - if we keep focusing on our unique strengths, and learn from the world around us, there's no limit to our potential 🏔🗾

🇯🇵💪 This week, Plexigrid had the incredible opportunity to be part of Hokkaido Innovation Week, where Carlos Orea Hueso connected with fellow innovators and energy transition leaders. ⚡️ One of the key takeaways from the event was learning firsthand about Hokkaido’s energy transition challenges. As the region looks to install new #DataCenters, #Grid modernization has become a priority to support these #EnergyIntensive facilities. It’s clear that smarter, #AI-driven solutions like Plexigrid’s platform will play a crucial role in ensuring a more resilient and efficient network. Many thanks to STARTUP HOKKAIDO for organizing an amazing event. We’re grateful for the inspiring discussions and look forward to continuing our mission of optimizing grid operations for a sustainable future! 🚀
