Leading Climate Action and Energy Transition for a Sustainable Future
Chi siamo
UNDP Rome Centre for Climate Action and Energy Transition (‘UNDP Rome Centre’ for short), acts as the principal, integrated global platform for the strategic partnership between the Government of Italy (through the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security – IMEES or Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica - MASE in Italian) and UNDP for delivering on two critical policy areas: Youth and Climate, and Climate Finance. - Youth and Climate (via Youth4Climate): Emphasise the critical role of youth in climate action, advocating for their meaningful participation in decision-making processes to address the climate crisis and achieve sustainable development. - Climate Finance (via PISTA and Energy for Growth): Identify, finance, and implement country-level actions to reduce the energy access gap and boost the energy transition, while supporting projects in developing economies to decarbonise and enhance climate resilience.

🌍 Sustainable Energy Solutions! In Indonesia, particularly on Flores Island, access to clean water and energy remains a major challenge. Farmers and rural communities spend a significant amount of time and effort obtaining water—time that could be better used to enhance agricultural productivity and improve family well-being. With the support of Youth4Climate, UNDP Rome Centre and the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, our project aims to improve access to clean water and energy for communities in Flores. We are introducing solar-powered water pumps, Barsha pumps for irrigation, biodigesters for clean energy, and drone sprayers for modern agriculture. These solutions are designed to tackle water scarcity, reduce poverty, and boost farmers’ productivity. As part of this project, we will also raise awareness about renewable energy and sustainable agricultural practices. By empowering local communities, we hope to create a lasting and sustainable impact for future generations. CV. Palmera gardens, an apartment in Thoraipakkam, Chennai, approached us to implement source segregation of waste on its premises! We were excited to take on this project. With experience, we knew that just one awareness session for residents and a recommendation for a waste collection system wouldn't solve the problem. So, we came up with a holistic approach with consistent follow ups. We implemented source segregation through a three-phase approach: 1. Initial Door-to-Door Waste Audit and Data Collection We checked every bin, asked questions to residents, and observed the overall system of waste collection. 2. Customized Sessions for Waste Workers and Residents We conducted hands-on training for the workers, accompanied them during door-to-door collection, and printed segregation posters with images of different waste categories. We also held door-to-door awareness sessions for residents and distributed fridge-friendly pamphlets to help them segregate waste correctly. 3. Hard Launch We gave sufficient time for both residents and workers to understand and adapt to the new system. We didn’t stop at just conducting sessions—we followed up consistently, ensured compliance, and eventually stopped collecting unsegregated waste. By this time, residents were not only segregating well but also suggesting improvements! Everyone was on board, and that’s how Palmera Gardens became a green apartment—segregating waste to its fullest and giving it a new life. 💚 Special kudos to the Green Team of Palmera for their initiative and consistent efforts! P.S. This project was also an exercise to understand our customers pain points and gaps in the system P.P.S. On 9 April 2025, Rome hosted the Clean Power for Growth Roundtable, co-chaired by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The roundtable brought together leaders from government, industry, finance and international organisations to discuss how to unlock clean growth, build resilient supply chains and promote just, secure, sustainable and inclusive energy transitions. UNDP joined the discussion by contributing perspectives on scaling energy access and building capabilities for a just energy transition. We also explored opportunities of collaboration between the Royal Academy of Engineering, The King's Trust International and UNDP Rome Centre ’s #Youth4Climate initiative to drive engineering skills for clean power and ensure more young people, women, and girls are equipped to lead in the clean energy space. We would like to thank Italy’s Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security ( Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica ) and the Italian G7 Presidency who supported in making this engagement possible. The clean energy transition is not just a necessity, it’s an opportunity to unlock sustainable growth, climate resilience, and inclusive job creation, particularly across developing economies. 🔗 Find more information about the roundtable here: https://shorturl.at/QncL2

On Wednesday, our CEO Will Straw attended the Clean Power for Growth Roundtable in Rome. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani welcomed His Majesty King Charles III and President Sergio Mattarella along with top representatives from the energy industry, finance, international organisations and institutions from the UK and Italy. The Roundtable discussed the need for responsible global clean power leadership, unlocking clean growth and jobs, particularly for young people in Africa, and action to build resilient clean power supply chains. Through strategic partnerships with local organisations, such as Field of Skills and Dreams VTE Academy Omowale Ogunrinde and Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) in Nigeria, our education and on-the-job training programmes equip young people with the transferable core skills needed to succeed in sustainable employment and entrepreneurship in the clean power sector. Following the roundtable, we will be working with UNDP Rome Centre and Royal Academy of Engineering to develop a new partnership and create more opportunities for young people. As Will Straw states: “Only with the right interventions will young people be well-positioned to seize the wealth of opportunities presented by the energy transition.” Find more information about the roundtable in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s article below👇 #GreenSkills #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #WorkingForYoungPeople
