"Do you have a moment? Perhaps you can think of something. We’ve got a rather difficult window replacement job to do.” These, more or less, were the words of Munich architect Matthias Wendt from the studio Landherr & Partner when contacting Werner Schmidt from the Finstral Architects Service, who was on his way to an appointment when the call came in. “I obviously didn’t have much time, so I spontaneously arranged to meet directly on site so as to take a closer look at what was involved”, recalls Schmidt. “And to see exactly what was meant by ‘difficult’ here.” The building is located directly on the Rindermarkt, one of Munich’s oldest streets – right opposite the famous St Peter’s Church. One of Finstral’s employees was doing a joint degree. Civil engineering and facade technology. And, as with every degree programme, his bachelor’s thesis was imminently due. Many people want a simple topic that can be done fast: the main thing is to get it over quickly. But Finstral and its employees have a different ambition. And thus one young employee worked with a team to develop a new solution for window frames. The result? An innovation that offers variety. An innovation that is a tactile experience. An innovation that is both practical and elegant. A solution that has never been seen before. We call it Inlay and we think it’s great. But what exactly is “Inlay”? The term describes our newly developed coverings. 4 months 6 installers 3 masons 349 windows 24 window doors Located in an early 19th century building complex in Monza, the Guastalla College was in need of renovation. The renovation presented a few challenges, however: the college accommodates school classes ranging from kindergarten to high school: and no restrictions, let alone interruptions, were to be placed on school life on account of the renovation works; the structure is a listed building, i.e. it has protected status, so the aesthetic features had to be maintained while the design and style of the window elements were not under any circumstances to be changed; two different installation methods had to be used. But none of that posed a problem... at least not for Finstral. When renovating the college, Finstral not only showed why it is a leader in the field with its modular system, high-quality products and installation methods. We were also more than capable of achieving the high degree of flexibility, adaptability and cooperation demanded by the project. The hard facts? Two different buildings, one from the 1970s, the other probably from the 1950s – both in serious need of refurbishment, neither now up to modern standards. The positive aspects? They are both in a prime location, right in the centre of the city of Bergamo in northern Italy. The idea? To get the most out of the buildings – by completely refurbishing them, even if this would require huge efforts. Finstral installed frames, windows and sliding elements that contributed significantly to the aesthetic and functional modernisation of the Camozzi 70 complex.
