WEBINAR ON OUTLOOK 2025 FOR THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY Yesterday, the leading textile magazine The Indian Textile Journal (ITJ), organised a webinar on the topic of Outlook for the Textile industry for the year 2025. I was one of the panelists in this webinar which was moderated by Avinash Mayekar , MD Suvin Advisors and my co-panelists were Raja Shanmugam, MD Warsaw International, Umasankar Sinha Mahapatra , MD Pulcra Chemicals and Ashok Juneja , Director Saurer India. The experts from the different industry sections have shared their views on industry verticals like garment manufacturing & exports, textile machinery, textile chemicals and overall 360 degrees view of the entire textile value chain. The discussion was mainly on the following topics. 📌How did the textile and allied industries performed in the year 2024? 📌What was the impact of global events like wars/conflicts, demand contraction and policy changes on the Indian textile industry? 📌What are the industry expectations for different sectors of the industry in the forthcoming budget? 📌What opportunities exist currently for the Indian textile industry and how do we see the industry trajectory in year 2025? The key takeaways of the webinar are as follows: ✅Higher raw material prices reduced competitiveness of the industry in 2024. China's dumping of MMF knitted fabrics affected the industry badly till such time the government declared the minimum import price. The spinning industry faced an under utilisation due to over capacity and reduced yarn exports and local demand. Garment exports were down. Only in the last 2 months the export orders have increased partly due to the Bangladesh problem. Textile machinery and Textile Chemicals industry had its own problems coming from lesser demand from textile consumers. ✅Increased shipping costs due to changed routes, EU's strong push for Sustainable manufacturing and QCO for polyester fibre and yarn had some impact on the business. ✅Industry expects the budget to take cognisance of the criticality of the textile industry and expect that the finance minister gives an extension to RoDTEP scheme, abolishes 11% import duty on superfine cotton imports, extends the PLI scheme to cover garment manufacturing and gives special attention to MSMEs. ✅Due to recalibration in geo-political situation, disturbances in Bangladesh and pick up in orders from US, in last 2 months export orders have increased. Most textile clusters are operating above 90%. Resumption of the UK FTA discussion is a good news. If all these factors play out well then perhaps 2025 will be an inflexion point for our industry. Industry is preparing for green manufacturing and with increased focus on man made fibres and increase in the capacity of garments manufacturing, India can hope to increase its global share. TRADC is also used for developing various sustainable products working closely with innovators. Testing their fibre and making small samples upto garments to do comprehensive testing. This is an unique facility which has has been started along side a Fibre reaserch center. Innovation is key driver for sustainability, these facilities really a big boost for the industry.

Simultaneously, Indian apparel exports grew 9.84 per cent during the same period. The CITI, in its report, highlighted that the cumulative exports of textiles and apparel during May 2024 registered a growth of 9.70 per cent over May last year. The country’s overall exports for May 2024 surged to USD 68.29 billion. Garment industry hail support to MSMEs and manufacturing sector in Budget 1) The Union Budget 2023-24 underlines the progressive vision of the government for holistic growth and steps to reach Vikshit Bharat. The garment industry hails the acceptance of the demand of AEPC by expanding the list of trims and embellishment under IGCR, which will help the RMG industry thrust exports, said Sudhir Sekhri, Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council. 2) 'The enhancement of limit under credit guarantee scheme for MSMEs in manufacturing sector, grant of one month wage to new entrants in all formal sectors up to Rs 15,000, EPFO contributions for new manufacturing employees for four years, incentives for setting up of women hostels, dormitories and crèches and upgrading the industrial training institutes will help the garment industry scale up and be future ready. Enhanced support to Cotton Corporation of India will help stabilise the cotton prices,' he added.

India's textile sector aims for $350 bn valuation by 2030 with sustainability at core 1) India's textile sector, a major contributor to the Indian economy, is heading towards a greener future in light of the worrying carbon footprint left by the global textile industry, which accounts for around 10% of global carbon emissions. 2) As a major employer and exporter, the textile business is aiming to balance economic expansion with a vision to safeguard the environment and its elements. 3) The textile business is currently valued at USD 175 billion, including exports of 38 to 40 billion dollars and aspires to reach USD 350 billion by 2030, this transition is all about inculcating sustainable practices such as employing biodegradable materials and implementing energy-efficient technologies in the sector's operations.

Gokaldas Exports surges 5% on strategic tie-up with BRFL Textiles 1) Shares of Gokaldas Exports surged 5% to Rs 873 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Thursday's intraday trade, in an otherwise subdued market, after the company announced its strategic tie-up with BRFL Textiles Private Limited (BTPL), one of the largest single-location fabric processing companies in India. 2) With the strategic investment in BTPL, Gokaldas Exports intends to stand largely self-reliant in fulfilling its raw material requirements for manufacturing.
