Here are the 8 learnings from my conversation with Avnish Bajaj, Founding Partner, Z47 the firm w/ 10 unicorns, 5 IPOs and 26 acquisitions: 1. First time founders are fearless & disrupt markets. Experienced founders end up thinking more distribution than product. They differ in Speed & velocity. 2. In VC as in any business, almost everything can be copied in no time. But reputation cannot, and it compounds with time which becomes a strong differentiator. 3. 70-80% of LPs are sold on the India growth story, though not all of them are yet sold on India’s timing and still questions liquidity. 4. Till 2017, Indian VCs worked in survival mode. With a world class DPI built between 2016-20 & demonitization which brought payments online, India’s venture capital industry could for the first time connect their own destiny with that of the country’s. 5. India’s markets have deepened and become profitable. What happened in China between 2008-18 & US between 1995-2015, is now happening in India after 2022. 6. Indian founders have always been ahead of the market. But for the first time our entrepreneurship is lagging behind the opportunities of our market. 7. Markets and businesses don't execute, founders do, people do. Every time this principle is violated, it becomes an anti-portfolio investment. 8. The last decade has seen tech founders go beyond the traditional approach and build multiple big businesses. While earlier this was considered a bug, now we have examples such as of Bhavish Aggarwal where he has built 3 unicorns- all backed by Avnish and Z47.
