Building for Billions: The Aadhaar & UPI Story At the Building for Billions event, Mr. Nandan Nilekani, Chairman and Co-founder, Infosys and the architect of India's Aadhaar system, reflected on the design principles behind India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and how Aadhaar, UPI, and interoperable platforms transformed financial inclusion at scale. ✅ Aadhaar’s foundational role: Providing a universal digital identity enabled inclusion for millions without formal IDs, allowing seamless KYC and banking access. ✅ UPI’s interoperability: From day one, QR codes on UPI were designed to work across apps, unlocking frictionless payments and new business models. ✅ DPI as a platform for innovation: Open, scalable infrastructure empowered both public and private sectors, leading to rapid adoption—700 million Aadhaar-linked bank accounts and 180 million unique demat accounts. From Aadhaar in 2009 to UPI in 2016, these milestones shaped India's digital economy, proving that designing for simplicity, scale and inclusion can drive transformative change. Women empowerment isn’t a one-day event—it’s a continuous movement! When it comes to the gender gap in formal savings, the question isn’t why rural women don’t save digitally, it’s why saving isn’t made easier for them. Behavioural science provides the answer! Women are natural savers, but are financial systems designed to support them? Across rural India, women skillfully manage household finances, yet many remain outside formal banking. Our latest RBIH whitepaper, ‘Harnessing Behavioural Science to Unlock Frictionless Savings for Women,’ explores how small but intentional design changes can create habit-forming, intuitive, and empowering savings solutions. From automated savings nudges to goal-based financial planning, this research outlines practical ways banks and fintechs can unlock a massive opportunity—not just for women, but for the economy as a whole. 📖 Swipe through the key insights and read the full report here: [www.rbihub.in] 💭 Let’s not just celebrate women today. Let’s build systems that empower them—financially, sustainably, and everyday. Rajesh Bansal| Kritika Shukla| Shilpa Rao | Devina| Aditya L. #DesignforHer #EveryDayisWomensDay
