We are excited to present Moraxella tetraodonis sp. nov., a novel bacterium isolated from the skin of Tetraodon cutcutia (freshwater pufferfish). Strain PS-22 exhibits unique genomic characteristics. Gene ontology analysis reveals that significant percentage of its genes are linked to biological processes such as cellular metabolic processes, nitrogen compound metabolism, and oxidative stress responses. These findings suggest a potential role in glutathione metabolic pathways and antioxidant defense mechanisms, opening avenues for further research on microbial contributions to fish microbiomes and environmental stress responses. Rothia santali sp. nov., strain AR01^T, was isolated from the hypocotyl tissue of a sandalwood (Santalum album L.) seedling exhibiting stunted and abnormal growth. The sample was collected from an insect-free sandalwood nursery at the Indian Wood Science and Technology (IWST) institute in Bangalore, India.   The endophytic bacterium suggests potential roles in promoting plant growth, enhancing stress resistance or providing biocontrol against pathogens. Peteryoungia desertarenae was isolated from saline desert soil, an environment characterized by high salinity and arid conditions. Such habitats are known for hosting extremophilic microorganisms adapted to withstand osmotic stress and nutrient scarcity. This bacterium possesses a high G+C content, contributing to DNA stability under extreme conditions. Genomic analyses reveal genes responsible for osmoprotectant synthesis, enabling survival in saline environments. Additionally, it harbors genes associated with heavy metal resistance and antibiotic biosynthesis pathways, indicating potential resilience to toxic substances and antimicrobial properties. The metabolic capabilities of Peteryoungia desertarenae suggest its utility in bioremediation, particularly in degrading environmental pollutants in arid and saline environments. Furthermore, its potential to produce exopolysaccharides like glucuronan  has applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Dr Jitendra Singh Rajesh Gokhale

Institute of Life Sciences is excited to announce the identification of a novel strain of Acinetobacter, strain PS-1T, isolated from the skin of freshwater pufferfish (Tetraodon cutcutia) collected from the Mahanadi River in India. Based on comprehensive genomic and phenotypic analysis, we propose the name Acinetobacter kanungonis sp. nov. in honor of Late Prof. Madhu Sudan Kanungo, the founder of the Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar, where the organism was isolated. The strain contains unique benzoate and fluorobenzoate degradation pathway genes, highlighting its ecological versatility.
