Supporting sustainable access to quality education and dignified livelihoods for underserved communities of NE India.

About us

Ayang Trust (est. 2017) is dedicated to enabling quality education and dignified livelihoods for underserved communities in Northeast India. Based in Majuli, a riverine island and the only island district in India, home to 170,000 population (2011 Census), primarily from tribal communities such as the Mising and Deori. Majuli, surrounded by the mighty Brahmaputra, faces recurring floods and severe land erosion, which have long hindered the region's development. Due to geographical isolation, systemic barriers, and annual floods, the education system has remained dismal, and approximately 75% of the population continues to rely on subsistence agriculture. This lack of financial security further worsens access to health care and basic needs. At the heart of Ayang’s mission is The Hummingbird School, a model of transformative education that serves as a cornerstone of our work. We believe that schools can drive social change, and our curriculum, pedagogy, and school culture are designed to foster love, critical thinking, and social consciousness in children. Inspired by our experience at The Hummingbird School, Ayang is working toward systemic transformation of public schools, both through direct interventions and by acting as a knowledge and process partner. In addition to education, we work in livelihoods and disaster-risk management interventions. We empower and skill women artisans and farmers through capacity building, collectivization and market linkage, enabling them to pursue diversified livelihoods that mitigate risks and reduce the impact of disasters like floods. Through this work, we strive to enhance the resilience and well-being of communities, helping them thrive despite the vulnerabilities they face. Ayang’s impact is driven by a passionate team of educators, development professionals, social workers, and engineers, all united by their commitment to creating lasting change through compassion, integrity and most importantly, love.
