❗ A Landmark Step Forward in Alzheimer’s Treatment ❗ The Alzheimer Society of Ireland welcomes the decision by the European Commission to move forward with the approval of Leqembi (lecanemab) for the treatment of early Alzheimer’s disease. On 15 April, the Commission granted EU authorisation for a medicine to treat mild cognitive impairment in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, under strict conditions. It is for use in people who have only one or no copy of the ApoE4 gene and who have amyloid beta plaques in the brain. It is the first such medicine to be authorised in the EU. We are heartened by the potential for this treatment – the first disease modifying therapy for Alzheimer’s disease – to become available in Ireland, which will undeniably offer hope for many people and families affected by Alzheimer’s. ''Dementia touches so many lives and affects countless families across the country. Art has a special way of connecting people, and I hope Art for Alzheimer’s will help raise much-needed funds and awareness."- Peter Evers, artist, photographer, and lecturer at Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology. To mark World Art Day, we’re thrilled to support the initiative, Art for Alzheimer’s – a limited series of stunning prints created by Peter, with all proceeds going directly to support our services for people living with dementia and their family carers. Thanks to early support, over €2,000 has already been raised, and the prints are now available for purchase online. Purchase now at www.artforalzheimers.ie. A special exhibition of the artwork will take place at Ballyroan Library, Dublin, starting Tuesday, 27th May for three weeks—offering a chance to experience these powerful pieces in person. Don't miss it! #DoItForDementia #ArtForAlzheimers #WorldArtDay

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is disappointed that Leqembi (lecanemab) has not yet been approved for use across the European Union - including the Republic of Ireland - following the European Commission's Appeal Committee's failure to reach a decision. The matter has been reverted to the European Commission for their deliberation and decision. Considering the European Medicines Agency has approved Leqembi for marketing authorisation, the Appeal Committee’s failure to reach a decision is deeply disappointing.

A big thank you to the Carrick-on-Shannon Men's Shed members for their incredible efforts in opening the new Leitrim Day Centre! 👏🎉 Their hard work—painting, planting, and power-hosing—has truly transformed the space, making it a welcoming environment for those living with dementia and their families. 💜 We’d also like to extend our gratitude to the Irish Men’s Shed Association for inviting us to speak at the Leitrim and Roscommon Men's Shed Network event. It was a pleasure connecting with such a wonderful group of people!
