Non-profit Organizations

It's our mission to improve the quality of life, status and participation of Travellers & Roma in Ireland.

About us

Pavee Point is a national non-governmental organisation comprised of Travellers, Roma and members of the majority population working in partnership at national, regional, local and international levels. Over the past forty years, Pavee Point has an established track record in innovative and ground-breaking work using a collective community development approach to addressing Traveller issues and promoting Traveller rights. The values that inform our work focus on the causes and symptoms of poverty, racism and exclusion and are based on principles of equality, human rights, social justice, participation, empowerment and collective decision making in a structured and co-ordinated way. We believe a community development approach and its associated principles provide an appropriate and effective way of working with Travellers and Roma. It means working with, rather than for Travellers and Roma. It supports empowerment, participation and collective action and gives priority to prevention and early intervention.

  • 📖READ: Ukrainian Roma in Ireland: A Situation Report 2022-2025 Pavee Point has been following the situation for Ukrainian Roma refugees across Europe since the beginning of the Russian invasion. In March 2022, we became aware of Ukrainian Roma families seeking refuge in Ireland. Although we are not a service provider, we identified a need to respond, on a humanitarian basis, during this time of crisis. Since then we have linked with Ukrainian Roma families, State agencies and all relevant stakeholders where needed. In our report we identified the key human rights issues brought to our attention during the last three years for Ukrainian Roma seeking refuge. We established a national phoneline for Ukrainian Roma refugees in October 2022, we have supported 181 cases, involving 837 people (469 adults and 368 children). We are conscious that the cases brought forward to us represent a small portion of the lived experiences of Ukrainian Roma seeking protection, but these cases serve to highlight their complex, and specific needs, particularly in terms of racism, discrimination, social and health inequalities. The report also documents how Pavee Point has worked collaboratively with organisations in the National Roma Network, the Ukraine Civil Society Forum, as well as relevant State Departments and Agencies to address the additional barriers facing Ukrainian Roma and improve access to supports and services. The report highlights the importance of a strong Roma infrastructure underpinned by community development  to respond to key issues collectively. We will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure the implementation of the key recommendations made in the report, keeping a spotlight on the specific needs of Ukrainian Roma refugees. • A big thank you to Longford Community Resources CLG for inviting us to their vibrant Roma Day event - continuing our theme of celebrating Roma Community Development this week! The Roma programme in Longford started in 2022 and this is their fourth International Roma Day celebration. 🛞🥳 We had the opportunity to eat traditional food cooked by the community, including goulash. There were wonderful performances by Romani stars (dancers) and Roma men's music. Miroslav Nistor received a recognition award for his contribution and dedication to Roma in Longford. Rudolf Simonic, Roma Community Development Worker, Pavee Point MCed and presented Miroslav with the award. 🏆

  • 🎉Yesterday we held an event to celebrate community work with Roma in Ireland, including Pavee Point’s work with Ukrainian Roma refugees. We were delighted to have the event opened by Minister for Children, Equality, and Disability, Norma Foley, TD. 🤝“Today is about celebrating positive achievements in our Roma community while continuing to push for a better future," said Gabi Muntean, Roma Community Worker, Pavee Point. 🪴“Community development projects identify issues impacting the Roma community and feed these back to services, policy makers, the Government and others to create positive change and achieve social justice.” Gabi continued. 🛞Throughout the event, we heard from Roma workers who reflected on achievements and what is further needed, in projects from Carlow, Tipperary, Dublin and Donegal. 💙💛Pavee Point also launched a special report on its work with Ukrainian Roma refugees, in collaboration with Donegal Travellers Project. “In 2022, we saw a need for additional support for Ukrainian Roma families arriving in Ireland fleeing war. We established a phoneline, through which we've supported almost 850 people directly. We also continued our direct policy, advocacy and lobbying work to improve the situation,” said Rudolf Simonic, Roma Community Development Worker, Pavee Point. Some of the main issues for Ukrainian Roma Pavee Point identified were racism and discrimination, and difficulty accessing the supports they need under the Temporary Protection Directive. Pavee Point worked closely with others to address barriers to accessing Temporary Protection. The situation has improved since 2022 but 2025 has seen the need to support Roma through new regulatory changes impacting Ukrainian refugees. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eFNPdQaq

On International Traveller and Roma day, we're highlighting the work we do in partnership with Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre to address health inequalities and improve health literacy among Travellers in relation to eye screening for those living with diabetes. Nancy Collins, a Traveller Community Health Workers at Pavee Point says: “A lot of people don’t know that diabetes is a very serious condition if you don’t mind yourself, and it can be especially serious to your eyes. Our work on improving accessibility to diabetic eye screening is because of the trust and relationships that we as Traveller Community Health Workers have with our community."
