5R Solutions for a Circular Textile Economy

À propos

SOLSTICE addresses key social and technical challenges within the textile industry. Through active demonstration in four European regions, the project showcases the implementation of climate-neutral practices and the transition towards a circular economy specifically tailored for the textile sector. Our comprehensive approach encompasses all stages of waste prevention and management, guided by a holistic 5R strategy: Refuse/Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Repurpose, and Recycle. The SOLSTICE project supports sustainable growth in the textiles sector by raising customer awareness, enhancing recycling with new sorting methods, ensuring feedstock traceability using the Digital Product Passport, and providing data and guidelines to decision-makers. SOLSTICE is a Horizon Europe project, funded by the European Union. It started on 1 May 2024 and will last for 42 months. It receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the grant agreement No. 101134989.

  • As part of the SOLSTICE project, a pilot co-creation workshop took place in Catalunya, bringing together 25 key stakeholders. Participants included SOLSTICE partners Circle Economy, Leitat Technological Center, TEXFOR - Confederación de la Industria Textil, and the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition alongside local textile actors, the Catalan waste agency, and representatives from regional and local governments. The session focused on three goals: 🔹Presenting three existing regional initiatives tackling post-consumer textile waste, 🔹Identifying key criteria for replicating these pilots across Catalunya, 🔹Assessing each initiative's scalability based on those criteria. Participants worked in five thematic groups to align interests, clarify roles, and identify resources. Insights from the workshop will support the Generalitat de Catalunya in drafting a future call to replicate one of the pilot concepts, advancing circular solutions like reuse and repair across the region. In mid-March, the SOLSTICE project reached a key milestone in Grenoble! The partner Circle Economy presented the local textile Material Flow Analysis, insights from the joint design phase, and a mapping of 4R (Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Repurpose) solutions tailored for the citizens of Grenoble-Alpes Métropole. They also shared early pilot ideas to gather feedback from local stakeholders. At the same event, Grenoble-Alpes Métropole introduced its “Third Place Alternative” demonstrator a dedicated space to foster and support local circular textile initiatives. On 25 March 2025, as part of the SOLSTICE project, TECHTERA presented key insights from the initial development phase and shared the next steps for this innovative initiative. TECHTERA is developing a revalorisation pathway explorer: a business model simulation tool designed to support textile circularity within the 5R framework (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle). TECHTERA is looking for pilot users — professionals in textile collection, sorting, recycling, reuse, repair, and upcycling — to help test and refine the tool through real-world applications. Last month, our SOLSTICE partner Comune di Prato joined the 21st National Day of Energy Saving and Sustainable Lifestyles, dedicated to sustainable fashion under the theme “M'illumino di Meno va di moda!” 🌱👕 During the event the city launched a series of initiatives promoting circular practices in fashion, some of which will continue beyond the event, encouraging long-term behavioral change. As part of the program, a dedicated talk on circular fashion brought together key sector actors. During the session, Comune di Prato presented the SOLSTICE project and shared insights from the focus group held in November, highlighting opportunities to advance sustainability in textiles. On 19 February, they also hosted a workshop with around 30 participants on consumer behavior in a circular economy ♻
