📣I was a panel speaker today at an event organized by E3G around the launch of “The State of the European Steel Transition” report, prepared by a broad community of experts and civil society groups such as Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, SteelWatch and Sandbag. 📍I pointed out that while the measures from the #European Green Deal that were set by the previous European Commission puts the #steel #decarbonization on good tracks (ex. revision of the ETS, creation of the CBAM, RED update, etc.), it was not yet sufficient to ignite the large movement of investment decisions needed to “leave the crossroad on the right side”. 🪴The Clean Industrial Deal and the Steel & Metals Action Plan should be doing just that. I shared what I considered to be good progress (ex. simplification and reinforcement of CBAM, EIB pilot programme on corporate PPAs for electro-intensive industries …) and what I see as being potential shortfalls which, to my sense, will need to be corrected (ex. unequal treatment of renewable vs low-carbon hydrogen in terms of PPA accounting and eligibility to the EU H2 Bank, absence of lead markets for green steel in the automotive and defence sectors) ⏱️No spoil, but stay tuned for some exciting news regarding GravitHy’s project in Ville de Fos-sur-Mer tomorrow! 👉Access the report here : https://lnkd.in/enRrY9-K

📅The International Iron Metallics Association Ltd. (IIMA) spring meeting is on! Bringing together key stakeholders from the ore-based metallics industry to discuss the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in the sector.   📣“Navigating EU policy to pioneer the green steel revolution” was the presentation made by Jose Noldin where he shared GravitHy’s perspective on the regulatory and industrial conditions required to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen-based DRI in Europe and, ultimately, the decarbonisation of the sector.   His presentation focused on: 👉The role of key European frameworks — such as the European Green Deal, the EU ETS, the CBAM, and the Net-Zero Industry Act — in supporting the scale-up of low-carbon technologies. 👉The persistent challenges (despite the recent encouraging announcements in the Clean Industrial Deal & Steel Action Plan), including the lack of clarity regarding the status of nuclear-based hydrogen, the absence of harmonised definitions for green steel, and the need to foster lead markets to ensure the viability of early-stage projects.   Drawing on #GravitHy’s experience, the presentation contributed to ongoing reflections on how to build a competitive, climate-neutral steel industry while providing long-term investment certainty and reinforcing industrial resilience across Europe.   #GreenIndustry #Decarbonisation #Sustainability

The European Commission released its Steel and Metals Action Plan, a long-awaited roadmap for strengthening the competitiveness and resilience of the European steel and metals industry. We welcome the recognition of green lead markets, the reinforcement of trade defense measures, and the focus on energy affordability—crucial levers to accelerate the clean transition. Ensuring a competitive and decarbonized European steel sector requires a clear regulatory framework and long-term policy visibility. 🔎 Where does the final plan stand on key industrial challenges? ✅Green lead markets are recognized as a key driver of the transition, reinforcing the role of low-carbon steel. The plan also highlights the importance of increasing recycled content in the automotive sector, which we welcome as a step toward circularity. 🔄 However, recycling alone cannot be the only solution. To achieve deep decarbonization, it must be complemented by strong demand-side incentives for H₂-DRI-based steel, ensuring a fair transition across all low-carbon production routes. ✅The Hydrogen Bank is referenced, reaffirming its role in facilitating access to hydrogen for industrial users, including steel. 📌 Yet, uncertainty remains on whether future auctions will be open to low-carbon hydrogen projects or restricted to renewable hydrogen. A technology-neutral approach, aligned with industrial needs, will be essential to ensure hydrogen availability at scale. ✅The upcoming delegated acts on low-carbon hydrogen will provide much-needed regulatory guidance. ⏳ However, further delays in their publication continue to slow down industrial decision-making. It is still unclear whether nuclear PPAs will be recognized in the final document ✅Compensation of Indirect carbon cost beyond 2030 is mentioned, which is an important step for energy-intensive industries. 📉 Yet, instead of a firm commitment to its continuation, the plan only refers to a future assessment. A predictable, long-term compensation mechanism is needed to maintain industrial competitiveness in a high-carbon-price environment. 📍 GravitHy will continue working with policymakers and industry leaders to turn this ambition into concrete action. #GreenIndustry #GreenTransition #HydrogenEconomy #IndustrialCompetitiveness
