About us
The African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) is an independent, international, not-for-proft organisation founded in March 2011 in Addis Ababa that coordinates, galvanises and mobilises relevant stakeholders at the local, national, and international levels to improve local access to world-class diagnostic services and ensure healthy African communities now and for the long-term. ASLM is the first pan-African society for laboratory professionals, endorsed by the African Union (AU) and supported by multiple African Ministers of Health through its Ministerial Call for Action. Based on the partnership and network centred approach, ASLM works on five functional pillars: Laboratory Networks: Strengthen laboratory networks and systems to support the delivery of clinical and public health functions. Laboratory Workforce: Strengthen the laboratory workforce in Africa. Quality of Laboratory Services: Improve the quality of laboratory services towards accreditation based on national, regional and international standards. Regulatory Systems: Promote and support harmonised national and regional regulatory systems for diagnostic products, technologies and services. Communication & Knowledge Management: Strengthen data collection, analysis and sharing capacity, communication platforms and advocacy to promote the laboratory profession and contribute to evidence-based laboratory medicine in Africa.

From 7–11 April, ASLM, in collaboration with Africa CDC and with support from the Mastercard Foundation, hosted a regional training workshop on Bioinformatics Quality Management Systems (QMS) in Lusaka, Zambia. The workshop brought together 24 public health lab professionals from 17 African Union Member States including Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Gambia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to strengthen skills in bioinformatics standardization and quality practices, critical for accurate genomic data and timely public health interventions. The goal of the training was to capacitate participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to help public health laboratories standardize bioinformatics procedures, maintain quality practices, and improve genomic data reliability and accuracy, thereby strengthening laboratory capacity and ensuring compliance with international standards. Speaking at the opening ceremony, ASLM’s project manager, Mrs. Norah Sukutayi Vere, highlighted the importance of ensuring high-quality standards in bioinformatics workflows and analysis to ensure high-quality data that informs public health policies and practices. During the closing ceremony, Africa CDC’s Bioinformatics Data Scientist, Dr. Harris Onywera, emphasised that bioinformatics and the associated QMS practices are skills that can only be maintained through diligent practice. "Participants need to ensure they implement and continue to practice what they have learnt in their own countries."
